I am interested in getting some undercarriage protection on my 1995 Discovery. I have searched everywhere for skidplates(fuel tank, transfer case, etc.), and I found that the price ranges from $200-$400! That's a lot of damn money for a piece of metal. Would it be easier just to buy some 1/4 in. thick sheet metal and custom fabricate them? If anybody has done this, please respond.

That's just what I did. Welded a piece of 1/4" plate to 3 x 3 angle iron and bolted the angle iron lengthwise to the frame on both sides. Made the angle iron the full length of the frame, so now I have frame sliders, and the plate is positioned under the transfer case and tranny.

I've had this for two years now and it works real nice, helps you over those otherwise damaging obstacles. The only down side is, that when ever you want to change your fluids, you have to remove the assembly. A floor jack makes it a lot easier.
