For the past 2+ year I have surfed this excellent web site ( It is like a drug I always need more)
My question is how much is enough when it comes to lifting your Disco's. When you take a stock Disco with all of it's abilities offroad. And start lifting them to the extremes that some can do, are you risking personal & vehicle injury.
(mostly slope angle) when offroading.
I would say that the average lift (tires, spring & body.ect.)is about 4" to 5" above stock. I will have 3" total soon. where do you stop.
In my opinion (and that is not worth much) As much as I love Rovers alot of you guys going to the extreme and making your Disco's look like crap and very unsafe for yourself. Since I do not pay for your bills and toys you can do what ever you like. I was just wandering when does it stop.
I hope I did not piss anyone off especially Blue Gill he has that cannon ontop of his Disco. :)
You guys have a safe one

It stops when I get Laplander axles under the beast. Seriously though. On a Daily driver more than 3in suspension and 32s is too much IMHO.

michael, that's a very good point.
when does it stop?
i think it all stops when you destroy or flip your disco because of all the mods. :)

It never stops, ever. You are fighting a slippery slope arguement. Go study Kant and Plato for a while and then come back.

It stops only when you want it to.. Or of course you run out of money and can't afford to do anything else to it.. But, for the most part it's your choice to say enough is enough..

I think 2" - 3" suspension lift and an extra 1" from taller tires that will fit after the suspension lift are all you need to master the road and the trails. Anything more seems like it would get unnecessarily unsafe on-road. There's also the concept of diminishing returns to think about...

Since it looks like I touched a nerve with you. Is there any particular works that you would like me to study from Plato or Kant. I feel my time is valuable so I do not want to waiste it on reading something I do not care about. I only follow my philosophy "shit happens" And "they will get over it" Or someday we will cross paths and you can educate me on thier philosophy. I am sorry if I pissed you off.

No nerve touched! I should have augmented my joke with a smiley face, as I was smiling when I wrote the message. Funny medium, this internet. :)

Anyway, it really never ends. Everytime I think "Yeah, i'll just do this and this to my truck", I see ideas for more.

...I think "Discos looking like crap" is a somewhat subjective statement...how do we know your Disco doesnt look like crap?

Tom & Gil
Tom Sorry My Brainfart :)

Gil I look at it like this my Disco will never look like crap in my eyes. And looking at your photo's you don't have that problem. But when you see a Disco with 3" spings 2" spacers and 33" tires or bigger I think it looks like crap and very unsafe. When you take a tall thin Disco and raise it like some do it reminds me of other 4x4's not Rovers that raise them 6+" and then they run small tires. It was only my opinion and like I said that is not worth much. If you remember the picture of the D2 that was lowered I am sure alot of people think that looked like crap, but the guy who did that thinks it looks great.

Viewpoints from the pavement.

Don't you only need enough to get the job done? Beyond that, isn't it just cosmetics? I'd love to put sliders on, but the curbs at Mall just aren't that high. I did put steel wheels and more agressive tires on to provide a little better snow traction. The wheels were just to eliminate damage to the alloys switching between tires. Now, if I were going to hit some trails, I would have to determine the requirements and fit up accordingly.

Hee hee hee.

Only until the baby is car-seat ready. Then it really kicks off!!!

The mods only pick up when you get a baby! Our doctor said to expect to need to wait about 6 months for the neck muscles to be strong enough to take him off-roading. In the meantime, the mods don't stop.

Looking forward to having a navigator and assistant tool fetcher...

Good luck with yours Tom.

Thanks Jeff,

Good luck with yours too. Maybe 16 years from now they will meet somewhere in Moab driving Dad's old Discos!!!

I like the tool fetcher idea. Fetching tools takes up so much time and energy.

My kid's a janitor. She likes to sweep the garage floor. It was very cute until she swept dirt into freshly repacked bearings lying under the axle ready to be put in. Oh well...it's been a while since I cried. :)

Ooooh, Plato and Kant. Studied both in college. What I learned? Kant is a cunt, and Plato needs to stick to Playdoh, and let everyone come to their own blatantly obvious conclusions instead of read the "well, duh!" stuff in his writings. As far as all this mod stuff, I don't see anything morally wrong with it. In fact, some of the jobs I've seen look pretty phat. Equally, some of the jobs I've seen look pretty dumb and excessive. Some people think it's really necessary, and if you're intending to go climb the side of K2, you'll need a slightly modified Disco. All I can do is speak from my experience. I've used my Disco for many things including farm work for my grandparents, especially pulling loaded peanut trailers out of the soggy fields or moving cotton module builders into position, places only tractors usually go, and I've had NO trouble using my stock set-up. Of course, I did fit some grippy mud tires, but that was all I found necessary. I've come close to getting stuck before, but always managed to just spin my way through. Granted, if I wanted to go rock hopping in my truck, I'd tear something up, but I think in it's factory form, the Discovery is an extremely capable vehicle that will go just about anywhere stock.

...just my $1.29
