How many pounds can the Adventure Roof Rack carry.
By wes on Thursday, June 07, 2001 - 04:36 pm: Edit |
It's rated at 110lbs., but they say that so you don't overload the rack and tip over going into a freeway. As long as you spread the load evenly, you'll be ok. Other list members have loaded their racks way more than 110lbs.

I have had over 300lbs up there as have a bunch of others on this list. Watch out though, you do get tippy if out on some extreme angles.

There are 4 slots for front foglights in the adventure roof rack. How about in the rear 1 or 2.

CB antenna clamps work nicely as extra light tabs if you need them....

What would the weight be of the 2 - 20 liter (10.5 gallons) gerry cans in the roof rack. Thanks

If you figure that gas weigh about the same as water, i.e. 1kg/liter, each jerry can would weigh somewhere around 20kg when full. (About 40 or so lbs), then add another pound or two for the can itself.
I have't actually weighed them, this is a rough guesstimate.

"gas" is approximately 0.74 times the density of water...
I used a simple calculation with a commonly accepted weight of water:
weight of water @ 8lbs/gallon * 2*(10.5gallons) = 168lbs.
I didn't add in the weight of the containers. Water reaches maximum density at 4 degrees Celsius (39 degrees Fahrenheit). The same volume of gas would weigh approximately 124lbs.

This rating seems low, 110lbs. Is this why so many of the CT vehicles rolled over in competition - too much weight above I suppose. Knowing that the rack is really only good to <150lbs, where does the petrol go for longer runs (I have to refill my 95 NAS V8i every two-hundred sixty miles)? In all the pictures I've seen on the boards, that big rack is usually very empty. But those limb-risers sure do look cool, and I guess you couldn't do that without the rack up top.
Cheers,
Jon

CT discos' roof rack ratings are totally different. The racks were integrated with the internal roll cage, thus making the weight capacity alot more than the regular racks. Read the previous posts to why it's weight limitation is only 110 lbs.
