I have a '98 Disco and have noticed that the shifter stem (metal portion of shifter just beneath the plastic shift handle) is getting very warm after 15 - 20 minutes of driving.
The metal shaft gets to a temperature that is uncomfortable to touch for too long. Is this normal ? Recommendations?
This condition occurs regardless of whether the heat is turned on or off.

Try touching the transmission, to which the shifter is attached

LOL Yeah, it's just heat transfer. It happens. My recommendation is, if it's hot to the touch, try not to touch it

Within standard operating parameters. Mine does it too.

Thanks!
I'll check the tranny however, if others have the same thing and its standard operating procedure - I won't worry too much

carefull - I was joking about touching the tranny! It's obviously hotter than hell if the shifter is...(my shifter gets hot too)

Hey - no problem!
I don't usually stick my hand into the fire just cause I'm told to - unless of course there is a WHOLE LOT OF $ in there!!!
On a serious note - thanks - good to know that I'm not alone!

It takes several hours of on-road driving for my shifter to get hot. I can drive all day in the woods without it getting hot. I have a 98 Discovery 1 with an automatic.
Thanks,
Mike B.

Ok - then maybe there is something a little wrong here. All day in the woods vs. 20 minutes on the road. maybe i had better take a close look a the tranny

if you are worried about the heat, change the fluid to Synthetics and you'll notice a decrease in temp.

Thanx, good idea. I'll make the change to synthetic - probably good for the tranny, and if it reduces the temperature, then easier on my finger!
Thanks for all the comments

I use the Hot Shifter option on my Disco to keep me awake on long drives - when I begin to nod off, I just touch the hot spot with the soft webbing between my fingers and my eyes immediately pop out of my skull.
Seriously, I'm due for an oil change, and I think I'll make the jump to Mobil 1 filter, synthetic oil, K&N air, and then synthetic tranny fluid, too. While I'm on the subject, what tranny filter would you advise (running stock LR now)? I'll also do a keyword search for tips before I crawl under the truck and start playing...

Don't know much about the tranny filter - havn't even begun to consider that! Just put in a K&N air filter. Seemed to be a small improvement while pulling away from the traffic lights. I did notice that the paper filter had all kinds of black carbony 'crud' on it. As I can't see any oil leaks, must be the crap in the air I'm breathing!
BTW Used to have a Bronco II. Fell asleep at the wheel, crossed a ditch, sideswiped a concrete embankment, which threw me back onto the highway -which is when I woke up. Didn't get hurt, but trashed a tire, wheel and bearings on the front passenger side. Surprisingly, it didn't even ding the bodywork - just scratched the chrome bumper - NOW i try and stay awake - caffeine is a good thing

all that black crud is in the air you're breathing - it's airborne tire particles (rubber) and other assorted crap. Nice, huh?

Does K&N make a filter that I can wear to protect my lungs? Perhaps it would give me more mileage and hp too - kinda like Viagra!

Scott Air Pack with fully sealed face shield.
Clean lungs, clean face - just reduced visibility!
As for more mileage, just run higher O2 content!
Just remember - no smoking

You have to get a "stock" of similar tranny filter. It is more of a screen than filter.
