Does this damn thing come on automatically at a certain number of miles?
My 2000 Disco II is at about 13.5K. Really don't feel like paying the dealer a C note to reset it since I do all the maintenance myself. Any input appreciated.

it should pop on at like 52.5k miles and like 104 somthing.. thats what the dealer told me.. I am not sure on DII's but I am going to assume its the same thing..
Basiclly they run some emmisions check and top up your fluids, i got it done and this is what i was told..
I would just reset it and contiue on with your maintence.. it's really not a big deal.. Just don't get SERVICE engine confused with CHECK engine as some people have..
hope that helps you out a bit..

Your vehicle most likely has Valve problem that many 99-2001 disco II's have. There have been 3 different fixes for the valve seat problem. Have dealer hook up (and watch) the codes that come up on computer! Get it fixed now.

how can one determine that this is a valve problem?

Take it to the shop. You Disco should still be under warranty.

I have 97 SE7, 83K miles. Red service engine light just came on. Dealership tells me they will charge me 2 hrs of labor to hook up computer, perform some checks, and reset the light. Since every thing looks and sounds ok, i rather just reset the light.
any comments or suggestions appreciated.
thanks,
jd

My service engine soon light just went off after several days. THe original problem was my wife didn't screw the gas cap back on correctly. I didn't think it would reset itself but it did.....
