Why distributor-less?

can anyone enlighten me as to why land rover went to distributor-less engines?

Probably because it is more cost effective, and because of more stringent emissions control.
As long as it works, and is programmed correctly, an electronic ignition control system will be more efficient than a distributor based one. It is also one less moveing part to wear out.
