I'm researching Disco's. I've heard all the good things about them. And have driven in some to experience it. BUT I'd feel more comfortable buying one if I could hear some horror stories or precautions. I'm not asking for you faithful/Hard-core Land Rover owners to negatively criticize these amazing vehicles. I'm simply asking for a realistic view on Disco's when they reach their later years. For example 97-98 models with 50k+ miles. Most cars need some major mechanical replacements done at 60k, do disco's? If so, what kind of maintenance $ am I looking at.

Basic Concerns: I have 15,000 to buy an SUV, I'd rather buy a used Disco than a new CRV or Pathfinder. I just need to know if I buy one with 50k for 15,000 am I going to end up putting another 6,000+ into it for maintenance.

Thank you everyone. I take nothing as a negative comment on these vehicles, they are very tough and last longer than any other vehicle I know (so far)

Jason

Might help to think this way: "I have $13,000 to buy an SUV, and $2,000 to buy an extended warranty." That way your butt is covered no matter what...

Ditto that. The first thing I would ever do before buying ANY vehicle(well except maybe an Accord or something) would be to buy an extended warranty. Before you go slapping new tires on, Hella's and all the other 'fun' stuff, get a warranty. You can easily get one for a Discovery for under $2K. I have had two for each of the Discovery's I have had and I know they will pay for themselves. Just makes you feel a little better when you hear something making a funny noise under your hood. But then again my truck has lots of funny sounds. Check out www.lrx.com for prices on Disco's. The prices can really vary and getting one from a dealer may be a little more, but more often they are better picked over and carry a 12m/12K warranty with them. People are always going to tell you 'this and that' about what year to get and so on. Blah blah blah. Just get as much info on what has been done to the truck and see if it has already had much of the minor pain in the ass stuff done. Get it checked out and hope you are more lucky than the guy that is pissed he did not get a warranty.
Cheers!!!
