I own a 97 US model Discovery SE, gasoline V8. It has over 65,000 miles. Recently, I have noticed on a few occasions that the engine seems to run very rough. It does not happen all the time, making diagnosis difficult. When it does happen, it seems to occur on the first start of the day, usually in the morning. The temperature on the last two occasions was not that cold, about mid 40's F. Along with the roughness, there seems to be some surging of the engine -- RPMs increase and then decrease with the same throttle input. Could be any number of things (bad spark plug, bad wire, bad gas, bad ignition, etc.). This condition does not seem to go away when the engine warms up. Rather, I have noticed that after I turn off the engine, wait a while (1 hour or so -- maybe less) upon restart, the engine seems fine. Again, this is an itermittent problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Bryan

Bryan,
I recently had a similar problem - very low idle in the morning causing stalls at stop lights. It would run fine with throttle applied.
I cleaned the stepper motor and throttle body.
There was a lot of black crap in the throttle body and around the stepper motor.I also filled up (always with premium).
I took it to the dealer twice after a bad morning and it worked fine for them. It hasn't happened since. I can't say really what the cause was, but it is fine now. I think it may have been a combination of black stuff and bad WINTER gas.
