Anyone have any experience with the Warn Model MX8000D1 winch. It's an older model I found that's complete and works well. I didn't buy it yet, I'm just looking for an opinion on this winch, and what a fair price would be.

Gil, the upright design uses a spur gear drive drain which is tougher than the planetary and oil bathed just like a worm gear. It is also wicked fast. Finally it has an external brake. If he has one of these it is worth about 350-600 based on ebay prices (you can find them cheaper). 300 if it is non functional. If he has a non upright early planetary winch I would say about half. So to answer his question I asked if it was an upright.

It's not an upright design like the 8274 and the guy won't budge on his price of $350. I'm still thinking.

If the cable is in good shape (spool it all out) and it has a roller fairlead, controller, etc and works that might be fair. Take off the lever for the engagement and see what it looks like inside. If it is clean then I guess 300-350 would be fair, if not keep looking. Are you sure you got the model number right? How old is it?

The model number is right, although different than I've seen before. It appears to be from the 80's, maybe earlier, the owner isn't quite sure. It has the roller fairlead, controller, cables, etc. and the cable does look good. I'll take off the lever as suggested when I go back, like you suggested. I'm not in hurry, I just happened on this one.

I don't have any personal experience with that winch. All I can say is by the time a planetary gets that old it usually needs a relube which you should factor into you costs. Taking off the lever (if it is like the current ones) lets you look inside. If its nasty then you definately need at least a relube and it could be worn or damaged. I guess I would say to save up for a new one or a slightly used one would be your best bet, but if it is not in your budget I don't really see why that one would not perform its duties. I have gotton lucky with the used winches I have bought, but you never know. And with that winch parts might not be available to fix it (where as you can get new motors and brakes for the uprights and nothing else goes on them).
