Hey guys,
I'm looking forward to making my first Disco purchase this summer and am looking at a few '97s and a '98 at a non-LR dealership. I've asked for service papers on the rigs, and was told there are none for any of them. I'm wondering if this is common to not have any of the service papers with a vehicle, and if this raises a red flag? The few private rigs I have looked at have had all their papers, probably because I was talking to the original owners. Any advice for a Disco newbie would be appreciated!

Start by looking in the owners binder. There is a service record book which gets stamped each time the dealer sees the truck for regular service.

Second, write down the VIN number and call your local LR dealer and ask them for the service records. I am not sure, but if the vehicles are not from your area you may have to research where they came from and call the closest dealer to their past home.

i sold porsche's and audi's for some time so i know dealerships pretty well.anyhow the point is i bought my 96 from a non-lr dealer and i'm completely happy, but i had it looked at by a lr dealer for any problem it may have.any reputable dealer will have no problem with this.i've done it many times and only because i was confident in the vehicle.if they won't allow it !run!

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the repair stamps in the owners manual.. I have gotten mine serviced at the dealer and have had all the regular scheduled services and oil changes every 2500 miles, air filter about every 5000 and I don't have a single stamp in my book... I do have all the receipts though, which I could give to the dealer if I were to trade it in but, the likely hood of them keeping them or transfering them with the car would be very slim I think..

I don't think the stamps are that important either. I have a 95 Disco (77k) which I have maintained religiously since I bought it last August with 59,000 miles. I am not into giving the dealer money for services I can do myself in order to get a stamp. :)

Very true, all of this "check the service records" stuff is fine and is a very safe way to go. However, I rarely have any work done at the dealer and I usually change fluids, etc. way ahead of schedule. On my 97, the service manual only recommends oil changes at 7500 miles, and now dealers are not changing the tranny filter everytime. Just cause it is on par with dealer intervals, it doesn't mean its perfect. Just because there isn't a record, it doesn't mean it's crap, either.

Check the LR Dealer.

With the VIN you will be able to get service history... ie. any work done under warranty. You will also see if the vehicle had repeat warranty work done. Hopefully. This is true if we ASSuME that most warranty work is done by dealers.
