My 94 Disco (77k miles) ran fine yesterday, but today, get the fast clicking noise like a dead (low) battery.

Engine's not running (won't start) and there is a high pitched whine (whistle) coming from the alternator. Ignition off, everything off and there's this erie noise coming from alternator.

Multimeter says battery's about 12+V (not digital) and it ran great yesterday...did rain like hell tho.

Help.

It sounds like it is your starter does it try to turn over or are you just getting that clicking noise If I not mistaken if the bat is dead you will not get any clicking. The clicking noise is usally the starter gear engaging but does not have the power to turn the flywheel.
The Erie noise is beyond me(with everything off) You may want to get intouch with a local Catholic Church(put the holy water on it)

Good Luck

This morning the alternator is still making the high-pitched whining/whistling noise and nothing has been on all night.

Think I should try to jump it?

Wondering if there's a short in the alternator that's pulling enuf juice so that the starter doesn't get enuf.
