When the stepper motor is on it's way out, does it create a strange sound from behind the air intake (toward the rear of the motor)?? If not the stepper motor.....the symptoms are....when you step on the accelerator (when at idle) an electrical high-revving sound comes from the rear of the motor. I can't really pin-point exactly where the sound is coming from.

Question 2....what size hex is used to tighten/loosen the nuts on the valve covers?

BTW: This is all on a '94 3.9l v8.
