Dear experts of this list,

I have a Disco 300 Tdi (1996) and I am not really happy with the mpg. I get 24-25 mpg and I feel this is a little bit to much. I use the car every day, first for 35 km highway driving and then 15 min of city driving before reaching work. With all this highway driving I feel I should get better mileage. I generally cruise at 55-60 mph and I am not heavy on the gaspedal. Is it possible for me to "economy trim" my Disco? Cam belt is new and timing is recently checked, made no difference. I am using 5w-40 syntetic oil.

Thanks,

Peter Thorén

My 1994 227,000ks 300TDi gets only 20mpg (14.5 l/100k)
I have got on a long highway run at 110kph 24mpg (11.8 l/100ks)

Not all get the magic figures Im sure are obtained by old ladies driving at 40mph

I find that my milage gets better if/when I keep revs usually between 1700 and 2500 although my manual says 2000 to 3000. Dirty injectors obviously make it go down also. I usually manage 26-28 mpg and better than 30 on the open road.

I get 30mpg (10.5 kpl)on the open road and I travel at 100kph or maybe just a bit more. I get around 26mpg in the city (150,000 people).
I don't gun it all the time but I do keep the air filter very clean and I use a snorkel.
I regularly get 22mpg towing my 17ft pop top Coromal caravan. Last trip over 4000 kms and averaged 22mpg.
My disco is 1998 with 40,000kms on the clock, it didn't get this milage until it had 20,000 kms on it. The oil use also dropped from 1 litre per 5000 to almost nil for 5000k.

Just a quick note to make you all feel better. I have a 1995 petrol Disco and on a really good day I get 10.2 mpg. Sometimes it helps to look on the bright side.

My 94 tdi300 has 227,000k(no, this not the same truck as Bazzles)and gets 13l/100k this is all city driving. l have installed a TD04 Mitsubishi turbo so this would not be helping my gas miles but huge help on power.

Can anyone give me the exact gear ratios on the Zf 4 speed automatic transmission that comes from the factory driven by the 300 Tdi?

I get 26mpg with the a/c on (hot Australian summer day), average speed 120km/h (I know this because the Police were kind enough to send me a picture of myslef doing it in a 100km/h zone) and a reasonable load. Got to 29 mpg with the same load, but no a/c and a slightly slower speed (funny thing, speeding fines, they have that effect on you)

97 300 Tdi Manual, by the way

Peter!
Kan det være at småkjøring og kaldt vær skremmer opp dieselforbruket ditt? Forøvrig gir bykjøring raskt et høyere forbruk.
Min 200tdi bruker i snitt ca.80-90 liter/100km
Mener du at forbruket er for høyt, kan du gjerne se på røyken bak om motoren har dårlig forbrenning.
