SG spare tire mount any good? I've heard it rattles. Any fixes, ideas, thoughts, rantings, on the subject? What about making your own?

Also, what are the advantages of a 60" as oppossed to a 48" one? I can get a deal on the 48" one, the 60" they have to order, so no deal. Will it do? Thanks all.

I used to have one of these. IMO the less weight hung off the back door, the better. I can stick a finger into the interior of my disco over the top of the back door with the door closed and locked! I attribute this to having a heavy tire and a heavy high-lift resting ont he hinges.

I now carry the high-lift inside. A 48" jack fits perfectly across the loadspace.

As far as jack length, a 60" is nice, but unwieldy. If you have a roof rack to mount it on though, I would go for the 60". Longer is better.

I agree also - mounting the high-lift on my rear door has done nothing but drag it down - consequently I've had to readjust the door twice, and it still isn't right. The rear doors are heavy and alot of weight already hangs on those two hinges. Also, it will rattle like crazy unless you bungee it securely.

The mount is very easy to make if you want to go that route. The 60" is pretty much a must on trucks with drop kits if you want to get a tire off the ground in the mud or anything soft...

Alex, have you tried putting it under the rear seats where the rest of the other stuff is - cross bars and bottle jack levers. I was curious to know if it fits under there, of course without the base plate attached.

Keep in mind a 60" may catch on trees. I was thinking about mounting mine on the tire when I first got it but after seeing how high it was, I desided to mount mine on the roof rack.

Jim - Under the back seats? No way, not without disassembling it. It will fit on the floor in front of the back seats though, although it's hard to tie it down down there.

Here's what I decided to do if anyone is interested. I got two u-bolts (more like square u's) four wing nuts, backing plate for the u-bolts, and a shitload of rubber. I'm gonna wrapt the back of my adventure rack in the rubber (zip tying it up there), then put it up there with u-bolts. Base end will be on the driver side and the other end rests on the light bracket. I have just done a mock-up so far, but will let you know how it goes. I shook it pretty good (not too much, so as not to scratch the paint off the rack), and no rattling was heard. We'll see though, when I actually put it on. Best part was, with the price of the Hi-Lift, it was all only 85 bucks.

Same idea as what I did. The baseplate withstood hitting a tree at about 5mph (the truck stopped and the mount only slid a bit)
