My rear window gaskets are rotting. I am interested in trying to replace them myself - any input/tips/warnings? Do I need any special tools? Never even tried this before - not sure what is required. Thanks in advance for any help.

I would not recommend doing it if you have never messed with glass before. I would stick to letting a glass shop do it for you. Should run 40.00-50.00. The windows have a special rivot to keep them in place.

Best of luck...

If you're talking abou the tailgate glass, its pretty easy. Takes 2 people about 20 minutes. Other windows, don't know.

Dealer. They should be relatively inexpensive (relative, say, to a new engine :) )

I got this message from Rover Connection (the other day) in response to a message I sent regarding the cost of rear window gaskets:

$36 each

Best Regards,

Rover Connection

Hope this helps...DougC

I forget the exact total from the dealer, but it was over $200 for the 3 rear windows. Silicone did the job for me...

I did mine. Piece of cake. After pulling window coat the window jam with liquid soap. After putting weather seal on window wrap a piece of string in the lip of seal that is supposed to be inside vehicle when done. While somebody pushes from outside pull string from inside to pull lip of the seal in .Make sense?

kevkor: does makes sense - thanks

DougC: is that $36 each for the rear side windows or also for the big rear tailgate window? (i.e. $36 x 3 for all three rear windows?)

Bluegill, what kind of silicone did you use?

$36 each for the side. Sorry I don't have a cost for the rear window-the South Texas sun has not eatten that one yet. Send Rover Connection a message asking for the price; they are very good about getting back to you quickly...DougC

speaking about window gaskets and the such, we just had a nice downpour ( :) rain=mud) here and it seems my right rear window has gotten lots worse. water is coming through my rear speaker grille even more now. and when i stop or slow down water is gushing pretty good from around the top of the window. i have used silicone pretty good around the rear tailgate seal where it was cracked, but the right side gasket looks fine. can i just pull up the seal on the outside and just pump it full of silicone all along the top? i heard somewhere these were 'bad' gaskets. well either way i am hoping to minimize my efforts on this project since i am quite hung over and tired today. thanks for the input!

garrett - how many miles on the disco? Are you out of warranty? I'd get on that water ingress issue before it becomes a BIGGER problem...water coming out of the speaker grille is just not good!

Wes - I just used a plain old tube of silicone that I had lying around from the local hardware store. I tried to find black silicone, but had no luck, so I just used the clear stuff I had and touched it up with black paint. Go find some black silicone (comes in a tube like a big tube of toothpaste and about the same viscosity as toothpaste). Cram the tip in the gap in your gasket and squeeze away! If you touch it up right, you can't even tell...

i've got about 55K on it. i am pretty certain i am out of warranty with a '96. yeah when i was taking my jumps seats out and checking the wiring for the hitch light i noticed some water at the bottom. just a little, but still a little is too much. i does smell a little 'damp' in the truck too. luckily it has been a dry summer. but i know i really need to find the source. the gaskets all look good, but has to be either the alpine or the side window. for some reason i remember someone telling me the seals were bad on my year truck. i will give my local dealer a shout and see what they can tell me. they are pretty decent guys at the closest dealer. (harrisburg, pa) thanks~

alpine windows have been a real problem for some people - I'll bet that's it...do a search for alpine and I think you'll find lots of references to "the alpine waterfall option"

just talked to LR Harrisburg and they said they did 'upgrade' the alpine window gaskets. water must go under the seal where the seal lays flat on the roof. my uneducated guess. the dealer does not even install them. they sub it out to local glass repair shops. need to get this done soon because i think i am forming a kiddie pool in the back of my truck.
