Okay, okay, I know these aren't race cars, but just for laughs, I had the opportunity to run my truck at a local track and managed 124 mph (according to GPS). So I'm curious, what's the fastest anybody else has gotten their truck to go? A K&N filter in the stock airbox is my only non-stock feature. Oh, I did remove my safari rack, but left the brush bar up front
...oh, and on a side note, my hood didn't start to wobble until I had passed 100 mph

How long did it take to get that high? 12 laps??
I think thats great, especially without the chance of a ticket. 90mph is about as high as I will go on the highway. At that point, there is too much rattling going on and the interior noise is horrible. Anyone else notice how loud these cars are inside?
By Jon Williams (Jonw) on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 04:53 am: Edit |
I was able to get up to about 90 pretty easily in 3rd, but once I shifted into 4th, it was a long time running with the accelerator to the floor before I reached my drag-limited top speed LOL It was about a 2-mile loop, but I don't remember how many laps it took ...like 5 or 6 maybe?
By Tate on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 04:54 am: Edit |
That is really fast, Jon! I've had mine up to about 85 or so and noticed that the engine still have more to give....just didn't want to chance it. As far as being loud inside, have you ever ridden in the back of a lifted, canvas-topped D90 with 33 inch Goodyear MTRs and 4.10s on the highway? About 65 and you think your head's going to explode...

107mph on stock tires, but with taller tires, things get a little hairy above 90mph.

~105+ in stock trim. How you guys get it down to 1 mph I don't know . I also feel the speedo is a bit optimistic so in reality it could have been 100 or 95. It woud go faster yet but I did not have enough room as this was in the city and there was too much traffic. The Disco felt stable although any fast lane changes seemed to surprise the other drivers as the disco swayed a bit more than it does at slower speeds.
My Wrangler is a brick but it used to do ~106 in stock form too. Then it would get overpowered by wind resistance and start shaking. Now with 35's it will do 80 max but still does not feel as top-heavy as the Disco. However, it is much noisier with the soft top.
Both vehicles feel steady but the Jeep seems to have sportier handling. My guess is it is the lighter weight.
By MA on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 06:08 am: Edit |
I've done 110-115mph with my 5-speed Disco 1(Borla exhaust, K&N, octane boost). It was an emergency, somebody got injured in a ATV. So I had the only car with an actual trunk(all the other guys had "unroadly" j**p wranglers). The closest hospital was 45 minutes away(going 50mph). We got there in about 25 minutes!!

Tate - that D90 could only be John Putnins - he's the only one crazy enough to fly in a lifted 90 with a "lawn chair" suspension!
By david b. on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 06:56 am: Edit |
I was reading in some Land Rover magazine that some guy with a heavily-modified D-90 went 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds!! It didn't say what he did to the car to make it do that, but I know it must be a lot. Also some modified Range Rovers did 60 in the low sixes.

205 at Le Mans last weekend!
By Tate on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 09:48 am: Edit |
Bill, it was John's. And that's why as soon as we got to 81, I got out and rode with Trevor.... Now that my disco's better, I ought to head back down there. Just no more swimming for my Disco!

almost 130 going down a mountain highway. Nice smooth ride
By willis on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 09:57 am: Edit |
are you people insane?....why would u ever need to go any faster than 80-85. 120? 125? 130?!?@#$$ what the hell are you thinking, these things are NOT performance vehicles....
By Jon Williams (Jonw) on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 10:03 am: Edit |
Why? Because I can. I know it's not a performance vehicle, but it's got a V8 that seems powerful enough once it's turning about 4000 rpm LOL and the speedometer is numbered to 130, and it's got H-rated tires, so I just wanted to know. Tell me you've never wanted to go faster in a car. 80-85? You must've been the gov't person who decided that's the highest number allowed to be on a domestically-produced speedometer in the late 80's LOL Damn, I take my Volvo wagon to the track and do laps at 155 until I feel better, so why not see what my Disco will do?
By Ali on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 10:32 am: Edit |
I had the rental 2001 exploder upto 115 couple of days ago. I think it had more go juice but I ran out of road and the border patrol was lurking in the bushes! LOL
By willis on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 10:55 am: Edit |
i hope that volvo is a Turbo R...i wouldnt want to be doing 155 in a cross country. I agree with speed, thats why i have a 350 hp audi S4 that has seen the far side of 155. my disco, on the other hand has never, nor will it ever see anything past 90. 90 mph on MTs is scary enough....at 125 i think the thing might self destruct...lol
By Ross on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 03:17 pm: Edit |
I never thought I'd be seeing a "how fast have you gone", thread on discoweb. I'm used to it on my 928 list but this kills me. BTW, I've done in excess of 165 in the Porsche. I was trying to keep up with a rice burner Hyabusa... The Disco, on the other hand has seen about 95 according to the GPS.
By MA on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 04:50 pm: Edit |
Thats nothing...try 175mph in a 2001 Porsche 996 Turbo. But you do have a point there, we don't exactly have the fastest SUV's out there(we are actually one of the slowest). If this was a Ford F-150 Lightning board then speed would be the only thing being talked about. We didn't buy our Discos for speed(right?), we bought them for there off-road marval. We wanted to stray away from the normal and modify the British Bulldog. We put K&N airfilters, aftermarket exhausts, performance chips, etc. to make them "faster", but in reality it makes no difference(it makes you think that it does though). If we wanted performance from a truck then we would have bought BMW X5's or Ford F-150 Lightnings. We don't care if we get spanked by some oldies in a Caddy at the stoplight. We admit that our cars are not out there to burn rubber, but they are there to piss on the j**ps and the cruisers.

Wow Jon, I am surprised that you did not run out of fuel building your truck to that 124 mph top speed
By the way, my 300 TDI could go as fast as 85 top. and 0-60 mph comes in about uuuhhhhh ..... uhhhhh 22 sec. You should be glad you guy have a V8 but when it come time to put in gas... smile for miles...

Rovers are fun for the hills. But if you wanna fly try a Mooney M-20E. 180 mph plus whatever tailwind you may have and then a quick turn and bank at around 45 degrees. Not much better from machines.

What the h*** have you guys done to your Disoc's? Land Rover UK website states the Discovery II 2001 V8 has a top speed of 106 MPH, maybe you guys have a good motor?????????
By Jon Williams (Jonw) on Thursday, June 21, 2001 - 02:28 am: Edit |
Hehehehe yes Willis, it's an 850R wagon. But the speedo only goes to 140, so I had the track radar tell me my computer limited top speed Other than that, like I said, herky, no performance mods to my engine or powertrain. And I was very impressed at the stability of the stock XPC's, but I can see where a typical MT tire would make you nervous to go faster than about 80 But this is the only time I've tried this (and I don't think I'll do it again any time soon) and I though the results were a little humorous. Just a little different flavor to the usual "is 12 inches enough lift for 315/80R22.5 tires and why are my 5-year old windshield wipers streaking" type of stuff
By Antony K on Thursday, June 21, 2001 - 04:16 am: Edit |
I can only get 105MPH before the limiter kick in and makes me more sensible again.
I don't worry too much about 145 MPH in an ordinary car but if you get a blow out at 100 in a Disco, Bye Bye world.

Okay so how are you guys getting to 110 mph plus? I still have no answer
By duh on Thursday, June 21, 2001 - 06:07 pm: Edit |
it's a new type of fuel that increases speed as well as performance...

damned right MA!!!!!!
By Jon Williams (Jonw) on Friday, June 22, 2001 - 03:02 am: Edit |
How, herky? By keeping the pedal in the floor ...well, almost. What I found was if I kept it floored, the torque converter clutch would remain unlocked and the rev limiter would cut the engine out at 5200 rpm. Unlocked in 4th gear, that was about 108 mph or so. But if I held the pedal not quite all the way down (you just have to feel for the limit), and let the torque converter lock-up (it did eventually), it eventually built-up enough speed and topped-out at 124 before there was just too much drag on that thing for it to go any faster LOL No special fuel, just Mobil Super+ 93 octane. And fortunately the track is somewhat protected from cross-drafts, I guess because of the banked sides? But that certainly was a help. On a normal road, I've never been able to go faster than about 100 because of crosswinds and headwinds etc. It just takes a long time to build-up the momentum of that truck (about 6 laps of the 2-mile track I was on) but once it's up there, it'll go. Hope that answers your question. Oh, and I also used to race cars semi-professionally, so that's why I'm crazy and tried this stunt with my Disco

wonder if British V8 (in other words, Buick 215) has the same bolt pattern as a mid-70s Buick 455... you may not need a blower...

It has a similar pattern to a 500 cube caddy so probably might be similar to the 455 BOP as well.
