I tried to put a shovel with my improvised bracket in my adventure roof rack eventhough Im not offroading and my wife said Im stupid. She said people will think Im crazy to do this. You think she is right? I plan to put it there permanently whether Im offroading or not. Can somebody advise?

You are not stupid.
I suggest you get "stuck" in someplace real conspicious like you wife's flower garden and then procede to dig yourself out with the shovel
"see I told you I would need it"
Ron
PS I put an ax up there and no one told me I was crazy, maybe if you get an ax to compliment the shovel you will be questioned less

Ron, by the way I also have a pickax hanging there together with the shovel. Her and my son wont ride in the Disco unless I remove them.

Okay Ron,
You're showing that you haven't been married for over a decade.... I like being able to sleep IN the bed, and getting cuddly and etc... ;-) IF you ACTUALLY made that statement, expect to be lonely for awhile....
LOL!

Guys,
How do the wooden axe/shovel handles put up with the elements? I've always been curous about that.

Here is something kind of funny...
I bought that off-road MAX Ax kit(shovel, axe, hoe, rake and various picks)from Atlantic British a couple of months ago and mounted some of it on my front brushguard for some off-roading the following day. So, I did a little off-roading on that following Sunday(actually it lasted the entire day) and I came home late. The next day I had school. I forgot to take off the axe mounted on the front of my Disco. Later that day I get called into the Principal's office. I had no idea what I have done, he tells me that he had a "weapon" of mine. I honestly had no idea what he was talking about. He starts describing the "weapon" and suddenly I remember what he is talking about(the axe). So I try to explain to him that it is not a weapon, it is a recovery item for my car. Finally, he bought my story and let me go without a detention. He told me never to bring that "weapon" to school again.

MA - you must be in California, or some other hotbed of politically-correct insanity....

Here in Florida, the wooden handles do not hold up any time at all. I have a fiberglass handle on my shovel and a couple of good coats of paint on it to prevent it from rusting. It is always mounted to my roof rack. Nobody complains.
Thanks,
Mike B.
