Yesterday, I flew to Phoenix to buy my wife a 1997 Discovery. The drive back to LA was nice. When I stopped for a bite to eat and when I finally got home, I noticed a whine coming from the rear of the vehicle that sounds like an electric pump. I am assuming it's the fuel pump but wanted to check here first. If it is the pump, I was surprised that it is so audible.

This is our first Rover, but not our first 4x4. We're looking forward to getting this one as dirty as the others.

Hi,

I had a similar noise in my 97 Disco SE. It was a whine from the passenger rear side. It turned out to be a bad water pump.

HTH,
Jay.

Thanks Jay. This appears to be electric. If I put the key in the ignition and turn on the electrics (without starting the motor), the whine occurs for 15+/- seconds and then stops. If I start the motor, the whine is constant.

Jeff,
I'm on my second discovery. The first was a 94. The fuel pump Was going out at about 97k. It was totled in a wreck so I don't know how much longer it would have lasted. I have a 96 now with virtually no noise.
Most will tell you fuel pump life is 60k.
British Parts Ltd. in Texas have the lowest oem part prices I've found. 1.800.231.6563

Thanks. The vehicle only has 36k miles, but I know that parts can go anytime from the moment mile one is put on it.

I'm trying to get a benchmark for the noise. Not being around many newer Rovers, I don't know what "normal" is.

I was down at Rover Accessories yesterday to get a K&N air filter for it and they seemed to think it sounded fine, but I don't have anything to compare it to.

The whine you describe is definitely the fuel pump. Some whine there is normal. Unless it is deafeningly loud.... forget about it and enjoy the new Disco.

Good. It's not loud and not obnoxious. I've just never had a vehicle do that so I wanted to check in.

Otherwise, I definately plan to enjoy the Disco and I'm looking forward to hitting some trails this weekend.

My fuel pump lasted until 170,000 miles, and even then I replaced it only on the bad advice of the Land Rover dealer, even after replacing the fuel pump it did not work, the real problem was the fuel filter near the right rear tire.

I have the same "whining" sound coming from the rear of the vehicle (right rear). This becomes predominant after a long ride on the highway.
Hopefully it is only the fuel filter. I will check that first then the fuel pump.
Thanks.
G
