when i switch out to optima is my SRS light coming going to come on?? that means dealership time...

No. As I understand it, the SRS light will go on if it senses low voltage, as in a dying or almost dead battery. Disconnecting the battery althogether is ok.

An interesting tidbit on a dead alternator and battery.
Last week my alternator died on me.
Here is what I saw and heard: Wednesday the Check Engine light came on, didn't drive it a whole lot on Thursday but light was still on. On Friday the light stayed on also, the whole time the battery light never came on, then in the batterie's final hour the radio would not work below 1000RPM and the tach would die below 750RPM.
Just wanted to let everyone know the "signs" I saw.
Anyone know how to reassemble a Rover alternator? I am tearing the dead one apart to find out what's wrong with it, however the diode leads are sodered instead of a screw down type. I assume that once I melt the solders I can take it all the way apart and that putting it back together simply requires resoldering.

ben, same thing happened. SRS light started acting up after i installed new battery.
i had the dealer reset it and all was ok.

Jeff, you could try that and hopefully it would work. But I read somewhere that those Marelli alternators were non-servicable. Don't know if that's a fact or not, but I also heard parts aren't available (which doesn't mean you could't make something work). Check-out www.wilsonautoelectric.com, cuz they sell and service all kinds of alternators, including Lucas and Marelli.

What gets me is that if these lucas marelli alternators as fitted to 95 and later discos are non serviceable, how come we can buy rebuilt ones?

They are, I called a shop and they would rebuild it for me. For $150, that's pretty good considering the price of a new one.
Anyway, by non serviceable I think someone meant that you couldn't just unscrew the diods and open the case, you have to unsolder the diods from the wire leads and you can't get the case apart untill you do this.
Anything is servicable, it just depends if you have the time and sometimes money to get the parts.
I would like to rebuild it myself for a spare or incase someone needs one quick like I did.
