I am at a loss... While traveling on the highway my Disc 95 engine light will come on and I will no longer have the ability to apply more gas to the engine. When I take the truck out of drive into neutral the RPMs go down to zero. It seems to happen during the afternoon on Hot days. Once this happens when I go to re start the truck if I don't immediately apply gas it will die again.(With no engine light this time) I have to let it sit for a bit (5 MIN) then re start and I am good to go. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING!!!!!??????!!! Is it the computer? I just had my fuel pump replaced as well as the ignition switch. CAN ANYONE HELP???

Thanks...

Why did you replace the pump & ig switch?

Same thing happened to me, replaced the fuel pump and all was good. It sounds like it's not getting a charge, take it to a battery store and have them test to make sure it's charging at high rpm's...just a hunch.

I replaced the Fuel Pump and IG Switch due to a hunch Land Rover felt as well. Yet after we replaced it all was fine for a month then it started again while my wife and I were on our way to NC. (7 hours into the trip) It seems to happen in the late afternoon and on hot days.

Thanks...

If your engine light comes on, the computer should be storing a code. There's a dark plastic box under the passenger seat, that may be slid on a vertical bracket, that has an LED readout inside, which will show the codes. Check this with the key on...check both sides of the box. You can wiggle it loose from the bracket for easier viewing. The codes show only if there IS a code, and the dark plastic hides everything unless a code shows. If nothing is showing, wait until the problem happens again, and then check the box while the engine light is on. You should get a code that will point to the problem (eg code for TPS, temperature sender, etc).

There may be more than one code. There's a specific procedure for clearing each code in turn (given at the web site below).

If you find a code, there are several websites that tell what they mean, such as
http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/RR/FAQ.Engines.Fault.Codes.html This stuff is for the 3.9L also, even tho they say 4.0L.

Re-post here to get more advice with the code.

Hope this helps.
Other troubleshooting hints: since it may be temperature dependent, suspect the ECU water temp sender (there are other water temp senders though) and the fuel temp sender. Also, low fuel pressure could be allowing fuel to vaporize in the rail, giving a vapor lock situation...this can be checked by putting a fuel pressure gauge on the Schrader valve on the rail...any shop can do this. Should read about 35-37 psi with key on, and drop when the engine starts..maybe 20 psi when revving. If low, could be fuel pump (you replaced though), leaky injectors, faulty fuel pressure regulator.

Thanks for the WEB Site...
It happend again today this time I had the Box out to check the code.. 03, I looked on the WEB site and didn't find that code... just my luck..
I took it over to Land Rover and they check it with the diagnostic computer and came up with nothing.. agian just my luck....

It is hot here today in NJ and I expect it to happen again once I start on 287 south... Hopefully it will show a new code...

I am looking into buying a good book to do my own work on the truck does anyone have any suggestions?

Again I appreciate everyones input...

Here is a link I found for fault codes...it refers to a different vehicle, but, I believe, still a Rover co. vehicle...the few other codes I cross-checked were the same as the ones on the Rover site listed above, and this one has the 03 code...

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Peter_Beech/TVR/injprob.htm#ECUFaultCodes

..however, it may not help much!! ...
03-- Stored data corrupted since last trip
No useful information available. Test drive and try again.

This might be an indication of erratic ECU connections...Maybe you should unplug-replug the ECU connector...could have minor surface oxidation on the contacts, such as happens on computer plug-in board contacts...but check with the shop on how to do it...battery disconnected? etc. If you do, let us know what they say.

Here is another site with troubleshooting suggestions that might help:
http://www.carelect.demon.co.uk/rr396.html
and a quote from that site:
In all cases poor idling or running problems with 'hot wire' system (from 1990), we recommend carrying out the following checks/tests before commencing diagnosis;

Good luck.

I dropped the truck off with the dealer today to have the look at it again. I noticed that when ever this happends and the check engine light comes on I can't restart the truck, I have to wait until the light dissapears. Is it normal for the truck not to turn over until the light is gone?

If the check engine light is on while it's at the dealer, and they can duplicate the non-start at the dealer, they should be able to troubleshoot it fairly easily with their Testbook program. If they can't, is there another dealer in the area??

Another possiblility is to call Rovers North (roversnorth.com). They used to provide a service where they'd keep track of non-dealer mechanics who did a lot of work on Rovers & were reputable. They may still do this...but only in the Northeast, I'd guess.

No, the only dealer that I know of is about 65 miles north of me. I will look at roversnorth.com as well as any other dealer or machanic that might help. Trying to duplicate the problem at the dealership has been difficult. I left the truck with them so they can take turns driving it around hoping it happends to them.

We have a 96 disco that we bought at Princeton LR on Rt. 206 13 months ago that had 28,000 miles. After 3,000 miles, we had to replace the trans. but it was under warranty. After 11,000 (1 month out of warranty) we were told that the cylinder sleeve slipped back into the engine and we had to replace the short block. The Dealer was able to good-will half of the cost of materials and cut labor substantially. I am also experiencing the Check Engine light continually coming on, but my dealer has been very cooperative in trying to diagnose the problem and has not charged me anything since they replaced the shortblock. Even though I have had bad and expensive problems with the vehicle, I am very satisfied with the service provided by the dealer. I feel like I am getting more miles on the dealers complimentary loaner vehicles which usually turn out to be brand new discos! Guess What?? My wife and I and our 3 kids are leaving for NC this weekend and will probably be driving the dealers vehicle because mine is back in the shop with the Engine Light on. You may want to try Princeton LR if you are not satisfied with the service and hospitality you are receiving from your current shop. Let me know how you are making out!
