I'm curious: What's everyone paying either for the supplies to change your own Disco's (Series I) oil and oil filter, or what are you paying to have a local shop or the dealer do it for you?

I use Mobil 1 oil & filter. I needed to get it done last Friday before heading off-road, and I didn't have time to do it myself. Another problem is that the damn engine never cools down when it's 110 degrees in my garage! I was surprised by the price a local shop charged me. After I get an idea what you all are paying, I'll tell you the price, and whether I was pleasantly surprised or bent-over...

I have only had it done at the dealer. They are close to the office and easy to get to. I pay around $60 for oil change, filter change, and fluid top off. Oh, they also throw in a car wash. I am in Saint Louis.

For Mobil 1 and a filter, your looking at around $30 from most places like Kragen, AutoZone, etc.

Last time my dealer sent me a coupon, it was $50 for an oil change, same deal as Brett, oil and filter change, fluid top off and car wash. That's at Land Rover San Jose in the SF Bay area.

If you're not using synthetics, the cost is around $10 when you buy the oil on sale.

I have only been paying about 42 bucks for an oil change and filter from the dealer.. They also wash and vacuum it.. I go to LR Alexandria.. However, HBL another local dealer, charges about 60 bucks and takes four hours to do it. I would do it myself but, getting rid of used oil around here can be a pain in the butt sometimes.. Besides free wash and vacuum.. Worth my $40....

I just had an oil change for 41.50, Includes a wash and vaccum.

Jiffy Lube @ 29.00. Of course no wash, but no annoying calls from the service writer at the dealer trying to sell me things that I don't need. Better yet, do it yourself: about 10-12 buckaroos. most auto stores that sell oil, take used oil for disposal. PLEASE QUIT LETTING THE DEALER RIP YOU OFF: IT's JUST A TRUCK; A British Truck, but a truck none the less. No magic here with a 40 year old Buick motor in these things...

I do it myself usually, but when I get lazy or when I have lived where I cannot do it myself (apartment living) I take it to Valvoline. For about $32. That includes toping off all other fluids (washer and radiator), checking the battery, tire pressure, belts, diff./transfer case oil, wiper blades and all that good stuff. I like that since I forget to check tire pressure and the other odds and ends with all the other fun stuff I am doing with the truck. (tracking down leaks, rattles and assholes who don't send my parts I paid for!!!)

$22.00 for a 5-quart jug of Mobil 1 from Wal-Mart, $4.29 for an extra quart, about $3.00 for a filter. So just under $30.00 done myself. Or, the Texaco StarLube will change it for about $30.00, with non-synthetic oil.

$10 for genuine filter from land rover connection.
6 quarts @ 1.19 ea. = 17.14 if I do it myself. Pain in the ass to get rid of the oil though.

What type of filters do you guys use for a SII?

i use Beck/Arnley filters. not sure if they actually manufacture them though. almost certain they make them for the DII as well.

I just paid $18 & change at the local Big O for Mobil 1 oil (conventional not synthetic) & Mobil 1 filter, plus the typical tire rotate & inspection, brake inspection, lube, fluid top-offs, etc. No vacuum or wash, though. I guess that's a pretty good deal. Couldn't really beat the price on my own...plus I'd have to invest my time, which has intangible value.

$40-60 at the dealer seems way high...they are the "experts" but draining and filling oil is about as basic as you can get. I had a dealer coupon a while back for oil change for $29 and I had them do it. They didn't top off any other fluids, no lube, no tire rotate, and they failed to inform me that my front pads were next to nothing. They did wash it though, but broke the front door pocket while vacuuming. Go figure...

Mine is spendy as well, but you know what - my Disco is running smoother than anything I've ever been - like diamonds. I end up paying for it in the cost - but I couldn't be any happier with its performace.

Just changed the oil
16.95 for k&n filter
7x $7.00 for castrol full synthetic

The k&n filter is built very heavey and is supposed to filter 10 - 20 micron's , I love my Disco so it only drink's the best. Do it yourself and it's very easy and washing my Disco is a work of love . My nieghbor say's my disco is cleaner than when it was bought , and I use it for mild off roading to. Dealers tend to wash will a sponge with every body elses dirt. Those swirl scratches
suck.

3) Exterior Car wash (they stop doing it after I got my roof rack)

I miss Dimmit too. Free food, the putting green. Only thing that sucked was i was the only one under 60 in the place. Lots of old people trading in Caddies for new caddies. Still have the tire cover on the disco from them.

are you sure that was a LAND ROVER dealer you're talking about? If it was, I'd be hanging out there all weekend. I spent all day yesterday driving RR's at my local dealer without any treats, putting green, pony rides, sensous massages, etc. Dimmit sounds like a fairy tale to me...

LR, Caddies, Rolls royce, bentley. Been there since the 20s or something like that. Was a LR dealer when it was still RRNA. Based on the number of old people trading in caddies with like 3000 miles on them for new ones I think they know what they are doing. Service is A1. People are nice. They keep everything up to date (we still get mailers for dealer events and such). It is an old mansion for the main building.

Scottsdale gave me a 50th anniversary hat after excess (warranty) repairs for misc. shit like lightbulbs, lock actuators, etc. Of course, I've given them several hundred dollars for non-warranty repairs - that's some hat! They also throw me the keys to their Rangies for test drives, so I guess that's not too bad. If I could just get them to do that every morning on my way to the office....

That sounds sweet. My favorite place was in Williston, Vermont called Euro Sport. Took my truck there to have a new steering box put in and they gave me a Relient K for a loner. (1XX,XXX + miles) I got about 1/2 mile from the place and was so pissed I took it back and demanded something comparable. I got a 300 series Benz finally. They even took me to my office once in a '83 Peugeot and the entire front wheel turned 90 degrees and was stuffed in the wheel well. Not sure what happened. Good mechanics and all, just the tighest of all folks. Now I live in PA and I got nutin'. I once saw the entire movie Men In Black in a Midas in New Jersey. Now that was fun!!!

Ron, I noticed you also miss Dimmitt Land Rover. Where are you now? Now they also do Lotus.... and the rumor they also own a H****R place is Pasco County. And yes, you are correct about the age... I was probably the only other person under 60. My 4 year old son loves that place as well.
