My 95 Disco stalls at times when I come to a stop. Sometimes it will die at 30 mph when I let off of the gas, other times it will flutter around 500 RPM's and die when I apply gas after waiting my turn at a stop sign. My check engine light comes on occasionally. I get a code 48 (stepper motor). How difficult is this to replace? I am fairly mechanical, but this truck is my daily driver and I am in sales; so I drive a lot. This morning it stalled 8 times on a 12 mile drive to the office. Can anyone give me some ideas. I have had the stepper motor cleaned. Is this something that I can replace in a short amount of time?

Will one of those induction cleaner sprays damage a Stepper Motor?

This sounds like a TPS (throttle position sensor) problem to me.
Replacement is maybe $50 from eg RoverCity 800-274-4830. Very easy to replace..on the front of the plenum. These things do wear out, and I'd say if it's been 60k or more, it's a good idea to replace it anyway.

..additional..
The stepper motor is easy to replace. Just uncrews from the rear passenger side of the plenum. Check RoverCity...usually among the best prices. There have also been posts somewhere about using a NAPA replacement...don't have that info but maybe someone else does.

Also, until you clear the code, you won't know if there are any other codes stored too. See
http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/RR/FAQ.Engines.Fault.Codes.html
for info on clearing the codes.

Brett,

Did you ever solve your stalling problem? What did it turn out to be?

I have not taken care of it yet. I have been too busy. I have simply been giving it some gas as I come to a stop when it is acting up. At other times, it runs and drives as it normally would. I will post my results as soon as I get time to do it. If you do it sooner, please post your results here with any tricks that you learned to help the rest of us.

Brett,

My wife & I were taking our pooch to the vet Tuesday evening when our 96 Disco stalled as we pulled into the parking lot. When we came out it started right up and drove fine, but would stall out again as soon as we let it idle. I remembered this thread so when I got home I checked this site for the details. The Diso is my daily driver and I needed to get to work Wed., so I'm glad the info was here. Cleaning the stepper motor did the trick for us.

It was a quick, easy fix. I believe the details are a little different for 95 and earlier. For our 96, there was an electrical connector running to the stepper to take off first. After that, two 7mm bolts hold it on. There are a couple rubber tubes strategically placed to get in your way, but there's just enough flex to them to work around. Once the motor was off it was pretty obvious that it needed to be cleaned. The end was gummed up pretty good. After cleaning up the motor and the hole it fits in pretty good I replaced it and have had no more stalling. It still might be idling a little rough, or that could be my paranoia. The Disco has a little of 60k so the stepper may need to be replaced soon anyay, but the cleaning appears to have worked.

Were is the digital readout box. Its supposed to be under the passenger seat but my Disco has the CD changer there. Is it behind it? I have a 96 Discovery LE7.

Machaiah,

The readout boxes are under the passenger seat on the 94-95 Discos. 96-on, the OBD-II system doesn't have a display, you have to have a reader.

Thanks Lesie. I see plug under my Steering wheel. It must be for the reader to hook into.
I guess offf to the dealer if I have some issue and pay up !!!
