I have a 96 disco with the check engine light on.It sometimes goes out after I fill the tank with gas but then comes back on again. It also goes out after I travell on the freeway for a few minutes but the comes back on after a few start up's. Has anybody had the same symptoms of the mystery engine light. Mybye if I leave it long enough it will burn out (just kidding ).

Had the SAME condition - look on the filler cap. It says if you don't seat the screw cap correctly the "check engine light" will illuminate. I just learned to push better when I screwed the cap on

My check engine light has been on for a couple of months-- I suspect it's a sensor I haven't gotten to yet. But it's actually taken to flashing on occasion-- for a minute or two at a time. Any ideas? Is it just trying harder to get my attention?

Flashing is BAD.

Thats means "Help, if you ignore me I might blow up"

Just on steady means "I am upset but will not bother you for now"

Does it flash at at low rpm only?

I don't remember seeing the tach-- but the last time it flashed I was in traffic and, I think, turning a corner. It continued for maybe a half minute then quit. I tried to duplicate the conditions... but couldn't. All fluids are full--had 1500 miles on the oil change-- and a brand new K&N air. This has only happened three or four times in 3 months... and I thought it was a fluke-- or loose connection.

Mine runs rough and I have code 40, which has not disappeared yet despite the first round of repairs - new wires. I plan to clean the stepper motor/plugs this weekend since it idles rough from time to time. One thing at a time until perhaps its cured

It has a little shake to the idle-- and that vibration at 70mph, but that's it. It runs VERY smoothly the rest of the time. I'm thinking, after reading several posts on DiscoWeb, that that's the o2 sensors. But I don't have a code scanner-- or the scratch to replace them.

Correction-- I think the idle shake and 70mph vibration come from a sticky valve. I'm thinking the check engine light may come from the o2 sensors-- but again-- no way to check.

Correction-- I think the idle shake and 70mph vibration come from a sticky
valve.

This is why it is flashing. At idel it is out of balance. You need to fix this.
