Our work car, (Toyota)dumped all its water last week cooking the head and will cost thousands to repair. My question is can I put a low water alarm on my 94 300tdi diesel 231,000km. If so should the sensor be put in the expansion tank or the radiator? I'm losing about 400ml of water a month I dont know if this is excessive but has got me a bit worried.

I would diagnose that leak properly.
* Chk if you have water in the oil - might be a headgasket problem.
* Chk if it leaks anywhere. Might be a bad clamp, water on the ground will cue you.

Seem to remember Roman made up such a gadget. Check at Polandrover.com

My 88 RR has one. Probably can do it w/ genuine parts. It is in the expansion tank.

I know for sure that Ford Contours have such a device, and it's in the expansion tank. A lot of newer cars have those lights. Probably wouldn't be hard to wire in/adapt. Depends on which automaker's electronics you feel most comfortable working with.
