Ok, here's the deal, I was pulling a trailer and my disco was doing great. Then I started up the mountain. Down-shifted into 3rd, it slowed down to like 30. Down shifted to 2nd and sped up to 40-45. Then the engine got really loud and I started to loose power. After a minute, the engine went back to normal and I regained power and speed. All this time, the gradient stayed the same. Any ideas on what this is?

No...no idea to tell you the truth...but were you in Low?...Whenever I am towing, I put the t-box in Low so as to let the engine relax and let the drivetrain take the strain...
Where you 'slipping' the clutch?
Maybe the loud noise was the thermostat letting the 2 electrical powered fans run so as to stop the engine from overheating?
Can you give us more details?

Loud noise was the clutch fan coming in. That will rob a decent amount of power...quick!!
