97 D-90s are very expensive. These were the last ones imported. There are only 5,000 (? Anyone please correct me on this, I think the number is wrong) ever brought into the US. The 97s sport an automatic gearbox, so that is a definite price. Also, that sounds like a dealer price, there are many people out there that have more reasonable deals. Are you looking for a D-90? If you are, then you might consider a worn out Series 88" with a rotted chassis. Take it, then build it up however you want it. This is a lot cheaper, and you can have the truck how you want it.

It's supply and demand. 97 was the last year that the D90's were imported, so if you want one, you will have to pay a premium. D110's tend to go for even more. Personally, I think the D90 market is grossly inflated, and will collapse once the Defender gets brought back. But that's just my personal opinion.

I heard 2005 till they are going to come back (if they come back). Makes for a long wait.. I want one too but, I can't bring myself to pay more for a 4 year old truck then what it cost new even with 50K on the speedo.

Peter,
You just have to look around. There are a lot of people trying to get $40k plus out of those trucks -- practicallly speaking (IMHO), its not worth it. You can find 97 SWs in the low 30s and STs in the high 20s.

I know a guy selling a 97 SW w/ 40k miles. I don't remember exactly what he was asking, but I think it was something like $33k, negotiable. Email me if you want more info and I can get you his phone#/email (although, I think he's gone out west for the next 2 weeks to wheel -- in his other truck).

the 90 market collaspsed when everything else did, roughly November 2000. Now, all the people holding 90s as an "investment" are trying to unload to realize their gain. Last summer I sold a AA Yellow 97 with 21,000 miles for $50,000. Now, I cant $40,000 for the same truck. If there was no "demand" or "limited" aspect to these trucks they should be swapping for $10-$13 for average mile 94's to low $20s for average mile 97s. Its a shame that the values are so bloated. I would look for one to return before 2005. Things are going to get alot more exciting at Land Rover with a new Range in early 2002, a new Disco in mid 2003, and from what Ive heard a new D90 in late 2003. The sad part is when these things were new, we practically could not give them away. It wasnt until after 97 that the D90 market exploded.

Not to mention these vehicles don't have your typical luxo-stuff you'd find in vehicles in that price range. (Not that you'd need that in a serious off-road vehicle) As LR Max said, if you want a rugged no-frills 4x4, you could get a 60's or 70's Series truck for under 10K and modify it up to gazoo! With all that money left over (roughly 30K), you could probably stick a 4.6 motor in that engine bay!

If you are up for importing, you can get a pre 76 series truck with a V8 conversion from England. Cost is fairly reasonable. (Especially compared to a NAS D90!) I have been talking to importers and beginning to shop around for one. I have a 95 Disco and a 70 IIA. But I would probably sell them both for a new chassis, 5 speed box, 3.5 or 3.9 V8 series conversion. 200 or 300 TDI might even be better. Parabolics or even coil sprung. There are quite a few of them over there, and you can see them in the classifieds of the LR mags. Would anyone be interested in getting one if I followed through with it? I think you can fit three 88" trucks in a container. Two 109s.

Vince does it for 1000+ cost or so, maybe talk to him, probably be more efficient(maybe cheaper too) and he can check it out for you. I think he is in your neck of the woods as well. Some of the hybrids I have seen have been dogs so it is nice to have someone there looking at it for you. He is trying to find me Volvo 303 axles for the RR now.

Cheers

Good idea, Ron. I was imagining I would have to fly over and check them out. If Vince goes over there occasionally it would work out well.

He goes a lot, and he knows what he is doing. The trucks he gets are way better than some of the others I have seen brought over. He specailizes in military but he will get you whatever you want. Much better idea than doing the go over and find one plan, but that can be done as well.

Cheers
Ron

Another person who regularly brings in Series Rovers in shipping containers is David at the Thatched Roof Garage (http://www.thatchedroofgarage.com/). He's heading to Billing soon, so let him know what you want!
