For the life of your Disco lets say 150,000 miles how many times did you change the valve cover gasket. I have a 97 with 33,000 miles but the valve cover gasket has been changed 3 times already. The defect is all in the left side of the engine. Does anybody know what causes the rubber gasket to fail? Thanks

Check the gasket surface on the valve cover and the head. It sounds like you might have a warped cover or a casting imperfection. Use a piece of glass or a straight edge to check the cover. If its warped, you will be able to see the gap.

Or you have an idiot mechanic who is over torqueing the thing.

All the gasket changes are made by the dealer. I have an appointment this Monday (3rd time). I have to bring this to the attention of the service tech.Too bad I have to tow the truck because its smoking like crazy. Ron, Jake thanks for your input.
