I have a '96 Dicovery has been leaking water in around the right rear speaker and down along the top of the side window below the alpine. Thinking that it was originally a bad alpine gasket or side window gasket I think I have found something else. After taking all the panels out of the back of my truck I have narrowed it down to a body panel seam leaking. In between the alpine window and the top of the rear side window there a bonded seam that 'hangs' out in an L shape pointing downward. Well the water seems to be coming out from between the two very thin pieces of metal that form this. Just a pain now, since it is going to be hard to find out where the water is originating from. Anyone else have an issue like this? Sure this is just my punishment for busting on Scott and 'the guys in the office'. TIA.

Garret, I had the same problem with my `96. I also found it leaking between the seams as you describe. If you pour water on the rear corner of the rain gutter and the water can build up a bit, you should see it drip from the inside seam. From my understanding, the water appeared to be leaking up and over the rain gutter but still between the black retaining strip that runs along the edge of the gutter. I smeared silicon along the outside edge of the rain gutter, sealing the small gaps where the gutter meets the black strip. I applied the silicon from the rear corner all the way around to the end of the gutter. This solution worked for a year and has since been redone. If you find a more permanent solution, let me know.

Thanks for the info. I know what I am doing after my ride after work. There already seems to be a layer of silicon throughout the rain gutters, but I am sure this is done at the factory. Hairline cracks all over them though. I will go ahead and do what you have done in hoping I get the same results.

Thanks again!

Yes, you are right. I found old silicon in both rear rain gutters. I suspect this was not done at the factory, but instead a dealer 'fix' once the '96 was on the market and the flaw was found. Make sure you do both gutters--my left side ended up leaking in the same place too.
