Afternoon,
Have a 97 Disco with 40K, which has just recently started to increase the RPM from 1 to 2000 when the shifter is placed in nuetral or park and decrease down when placed in gear. Any body with ideas?

Just a thought: how about the battery/charging system? Once, after I zapped my battery, when I had it out of gear, if I touched the pedal, the revs would go up really high. It stopped once the battery was recharged. Your symptoms aren't the same, but it's something to check. Do the headlights dim quite a bit if you crank it with them on? It might be a sign of the battery going south. Again, this is just a theory.

Unfortunately my battery is fine, the LR service guy thought it might be the air intake control valve which he siad can sometimes get stuck, but was fine when I checked it

I had the same problem in my '98. After I use cruise control, the idle got out of line. I took it back to the dealer and they adjusted the throttle cable in about 3 minutes and it's been fine. It was doing the same thing, in park and neutral it went to about 2000 RPMs, in gear it kicks down because you're putting a load on.

Donno if there is a difference between Autos and Manuals, but my manual rarely does that, however, you must check the airflow valve with a hexegon allen key, and the other adjustment, donno what it is called, using a flat head screw driver.
Moreover, you may check for the oxygene sensor on the rear of the engine...if it is clogged or not...
The throttle cable should not be messed with, as that usually should be the same...however, when i go offroading, i like to have more throttle at idle, so i keep changing the position...

Mine did the same thing in Park and Neutral. That had to reprogram the eeprom and clean out some air intake thing that was gummed up by the emmissions crap. Thank goodness I have friends at the dealership.
