I'm looking at cutting off the lower air dam and triming the end caps on my front bumper of my 98 D1. My question is about the wiring of the fog lights in the lower air dam. I know that they are 55w but, there are two wires going to each lamp. One is thicker then the other and they are both going into the back of the lamp in different plugs. Why are there two? Is one Pos and the other Neg or is it some thing else? Would pulling these cause my hella lights on the brush bar to not function? I want to re-use those existing wires to run to fog lights that I want to add to the brush bar (4 on bar) so that I can use the same dash switch but, the two wires are making my wonder.. I could under stand if they were wrapped together and went in via the same plug but these each have their own plug into the light and that looks weird to me. Anybody know? Or can anybody tell me where I can re-wire the new wires to so that I can re-use the same dash switch without re-using the existing wires?

One is hot, one is ground. You can use the switch to run some driving lights, no problem. I ran a pair of 100W hellas off the stock foglight wiring and switch for a while. You will have to make a modification to the wiring at the switch if you want your new driving lights to work with the highbeams, though.

I have two Hellas already. What I want to do is wire two additional 55w fog lights to the stock wiring to make up for the two that I'm getting rid of and re-use the old wiring and switch. That is what I thought it was but that just looks strange to me that they would run individual wires for Pos and Neg when they could just loom them together like every one else does. Cool time to do some measuring and order some new lights and get to cutting.

Many OEM fog lights are wired like that and so are many aftermarket ones. I have seen few using the housing mounting bolts for ground but most lights have 2 wires coming out of the housing.

And yes, it is OK to use the existing wires for aftermarket lights.
