For a novice like myself how can you tell when looking under the bonnet (Hood). Gazing at the engine, what it is? My quandry have I got a 200 TDI lump which should be there or is it a 300 TDI which the previous owner assures me it is. Any ideas like fanbelt layout number of pulleys and position of alternator?

The engine number is stamped on each bank of the cylinder block between the center branches of the exhaust manifold, the compression ratio should be stamped next to it ( CRxxxx ). The manufacturer's engine codes are:
200 TDi 12L00001
300 TDi
Manual trans and E.D.C. (electronic diesel control) 17L00001
Manual trans and DETOX system (not U.K.) 18L00001
Auto trans and EDC 19L00001
Auto trans and DETOX system (not U.K.) 20L00001
Manual trans and EGR 21L00001
Auto trans and EGR 22L00001
