Hey guys, I am trying to get my recovery gear together and was wondering about the high lifts.
1. 48" vs. 60"?
2. Is one brand better than another?
3. Anyone using the Jack Mate?
4. Any other useful accessories?
5. Where to buy?
Thanks for the help,
Wesley

As for where to buy, go to a farmers supply store such as Tractor Supply Center. They have 48" Hi-Lift jacks (red one) for $41. An off-road shop will charge you $70 for the same product.

If you have the storage (roof rack), get the 60". Otherwise, the 48" can be stored internally.

Have not used another brand, but the Jack-All jack seems popular overseas.

Have not used a Jack-Mate.

Accessories would include a base, either home made or bought, d-rings, chain, gloves, etc.

They can be bought at most off-road sources and farming supply shops. Price for a 48" is in the $40's and 60" jacks are up to about $70. Shipping will be the problem ($) if you can't find it locally, so shop around.

Wesley,

You may want to also consider what it takes to use one as part of the cost. On a stock Disco, there really isn't anywhere but the rear hitch. So, you will need some sliders and either a front bumper or some jack-mate type things to use for the front.

I don't even bother carrying mine, as I have my big tire on the back carrier and I can't even jack up with that in the way.

I know it has a gagillion other uses besides jacking, but I don't see them as compelling enough to bring mine along until i get the appropriate additions on my truck to use it with.

If I am wrong on this, somebody please correct me...I would appreciate being wrong on this one...

our local farm shop is Quality farm and fleet they have the hi-lift sold under the brand MTD. it's $40-50

one problem is it claims to only be rated to 6k

where as my jack-all is rated to 8k, thats why i bought mine.

I do have Rovertym sliders, but only stock bumpers in front and rear and no jack points.
I have the Warn rear shackle and lifting rings in the rear.
I have nothing in the front due to my LR brush guard and home made skid plate. Like the Terrain Masters, but will not work with my setup, therefore I do not know what to put up front.
thanks for the input so far,
Wesley

PS If you can help with front recovery I'd love it!

Northern has both lengths of HiLifts(short and tall) for a competitive price w/ Tractor Supply. TS here has both lengths, too. People actually use them farming around here, I guess. (LOL!! I live on a farm!)

I'll ditto Ron on the "Make sure you have a board"; it can be almost worse than not having it if you don't have firm support under there.

I don't have one, but a friend had a Jackmate at the MAR last year, so I got to see it in use in a competition. WOW! It made ALL the difference! If he and his partner hadn't missed getting the parking brake set once, he would have won that event because of the Jackmate. It's on my to-get list (but I've got a long list, so it may be awhile before I actually cough up the cash!)

Mi dos centavos...

I thought the Jack-Mate was a Jack-All accessory? Are these interchangeable between JackAll and HiLift brand? I have never seen the two jacks side-by-side so I don't know what, if any, accessories are interchangable.

As for the comment about "don't carry one unless you have jack points", my main interrest in the HiLift is for recovery. I'm just starting to outfit my Disco and it's a lot easier to put out $150 for a HiLift, recovery straps/chains, shackles, etc. than $1500 - $2000 for a bar / winch combo. I may be there for an hour doing manual recovery, but it's better than nothing.

The first time you try that, you will start saving for the bar/winch combo. Believe me, I have been there. Also, bring a LONG extension pole to be able to exert the some 200-300 lbs of force it takes to move that thing when your truck is deep in the mud or on a hill. It IS better than nothing, just be sure to practice with it before busting it out for the first time when you are in trouble. Oh, and get some LONG wrope or chain. When I was stuck and trying to hi-lift my ass out, there was nothing w/in the 50 foot supply I had except for an old tree that I lifted right out of the ground as my Disco laughed at me. :)

As far as Jackall vs. Hi-Lift, I think they are simply the US vs. British versions of the same thing, but I dunno. You can get some extra snob points by buying the Jackall, I guess. ;)

Jackall is canadian.

In my very limited experience I found the casting to be better on the Hi lift so it worked a bit smoother. I have also not seen a 60in jackall.

Cheers

I have a Jackall. It is basically the same as a highlift, except the highlift has a lip at the end of the jack toe. It is harder to mount *jackall* accessories (like the D90/110 extension tube) to a highlift unless you file that lip off. The highlift handle is removeable, jackall's is fixed. But the jackall handle is also a larger OD which is nice when you really use it under load.

I also have a jackmate. If you plan to winch with the jack, you better get the jackmate AND lots of chain. At first it would not fit on the jackall rack, but after some fiddling I realized it could be solved with a mill file. The rack's square outer corners were contacting the inner rounded corners in the jackmate. Once I took a little material off the edge of the rack, the jackmate slid right on.

I've used a high-lift to recover my disco a few times, a couple of times I was stuck in frame-deep clay. It works, but it is HARD WORK.

Here is what you will need to recover your disco from the receiver hitch.

2 tree straps
1 hitch pin to fit your receiver
2 3/4" anchor shackles
chain with grab hooks at each end
length of wire rope (or something similar - not a tow strap)

You can wrap it up for maybe $125 or so, jack included.

Once you do a couple of difficult recoveries with it, you will really want to avoid getting stuck, believe me. :)
