The dealer should have it, but I've heard that they crack and peel over time. Some list members have painted their hoods instead.

yes, they crack.
paint is better and more permanent.
if you are not 100% sure you want to permanently paint, try http://www.britishpacific.com
i got mine from them.

I took mine to a local sign design shop that does vinly graphics and they were able to order me some flat black vinly and cut it to fit the whole thing was $60 and looks just as good as the factory one. As for the longevity the guy a the sign shop said I should not have any problems.

The parts dept of your local dealer can get you one. I had the part number but cant find it in all my mess here. It is listed in the sticker package for the XD Discovery. Last year I was quoted a price @ $109.00.

Hey leslie,
I may be wrong here but aren't the hoods on disco made of steel? I may be wrong though..
By nadim on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 - 07:40 am: Edit |
I think the hoods are made of steel as well...correct me if I am wrong...the only 2 panels that are made of steel are the roof and the hood....no?
By Ron on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 - 07:42 am: Edit |
I thought the hood was steel, I know RR hoods are steel. The entire inner body structure is steel as well only the outer pannels are aluminium.

Hey, if I'm wrong I'm wrong... ;-)
But with how it quivers, I was thought that it was aluminum, as a weight-saving part... HMMMMM......
LET'S FIND OUT....
Where's my magnet at??

I'm interested in the bonnet decal. Please let me know what you want for it. I emailed you off line moments ago. Thanks
Ron

Disco 1 bonnet is ALUMINUM, not Steel.
Disco 1 roof is Steel.
Range Rover Classic bonnet is Steel.
Range Rover Classic roof is Aluminum.
Ron,
I got your e-mail, but the bonnet decal was already gone.

Got home last night, found a magnet.
Tested it out on the wife's car... it stuck to to the doors, fenders, roof, hood, etc.
Then turned to the Disco...
Roof: steel, stuck to it fine.
Doors, fenders, rear quarter panels: didn't stick, obviously aluminum.
Hood: (drumroll.............)
Didn't stick. The frame for the hood on the Disco is steel, but the skin on my hood is aluminum.
Now, I can't vouch for any other Discos, only mine, but I can conclusively say that
"Magnets don't stick to the hood on my Discovery."
Why don't everyone else try this, too? I'm really getting curious now....

when i totaled my '94 disco the hood was torn up pretty good and you could see that is was certainly a alumimum top skin with steel underneath. where the paint was taken off and torn up it was not rusting at all (after sitting for weeks)........the steel underneath was. but it sounds like the mr. science project with magnets works too. no need to total your rover to find out. i was just bored that day.

Ahhh...that's why you need the famous 'Lucas tri-polar magnet'. Sticks to aluminium. RN used to stock 'em. Call up and ask for Lanny...he knows where they are hidden....

Nah, have to ask for Les these days....

One of these days I will paint my hood too.
I figured out what they are really for, so that when you are driving around you don't have to look at a tree branch scared hood and be reminded of the everlasting marks that your hobbie has put on your car.
Also, when I paint it I will tape off the patern and then sand it with my palm sander and use that duraliner roll on stuff.
Then I will take out all of the interior and continue painting until everthing below the windows is painted. I would love to tow an empty Disco into a RhinoLiner place and ask them to spray the inside tub bright yellow. Hehe
