We cut our trip short late Sunday after noise and movement developed on the waterpump pulley in the '96 disco. At idle, the pulley moves back and forth and at higher revs evens out a bit. With the engine off, I can rock the fan and pulley together--no nuts are loose. Am I correct in assuming the bearing or shaft in the waterpump is gone?

My last trip to the dealership (had one of those 100,000 mi. warranties, there was 99,967 on the clock) was when I discovered that the water pump was going to die. The original concern was that there was a "chirping" comming from the engine. After a new water pump, the "Chirp" stoped. So, does yours chirp? The deciding factor. Oh, I forgot to add that my disco is a 95' auto.

Mine did not chirp--it was a lot louder--and visibly the pulley rocked back and forth. It was replaced yesterday under extended warranty :)

Cost:
1) 3.3 hrs of shop labor @ $85/hr = $280
2) Water Pump Part # STC4378 = $67
3) Antifreeze = $10
Total Cost (inc taxes) = $389.83

Heading out today so hope the new one works
