had that damn check engine light come one, took it to the deler said the stepper motor is bad. wanted $450 to fix it. So...anyone know where I can get one for cheap? And, anyone know how to turn off the check engine light once I replace the stepper motor?
thanks in advance

If you have an OBD-1 Disco, you can reset the check engine light with a procedure given at this site:
http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/RR/FAQ.Engines.Fault.Codes.html
btw, the "serial mating plug" is a white oval plug under the glovebox (need to remove the cardboard cover)
...and the following site gives part numbers for
rr stepper motor (IAC valve) replacements from GM, NAPA, AC Delco...it should be the same as the Disco, I believe, but it's worth taking yours in to the store to compare...20 second removal procedure...
following is also a quote from the site with the part numbers...

Idle Air Bypass Valve: Salvador, of Baja Rovers, Mexico, found that as we suspected the the idle air bypass valve/stepper
motor is indeed a GM part. The Napa part number is 2-1738. Phil Tetzlaff reports finding this part at his Boulder Colorado
NAPA store, but later exchanged it for one manufactured by AC Delco (Napa pn 217437). The AC Delco part number is
25527077, for those who may wish to search for it at other auto parts stores. It appeared to be of higher quality (in casting
density and spring strength) than the Napa brand part, and indeed appeared to be exactly the same as the Land Rover part.
The final kicker was that while the "genuine" Land Rover part is about $140, the Napa part cost was $51.99, and the AC
Delco only $38.51!

So anybody actually used AC Delco or NAPA part stepper motor?
I appreciate sharing your experience.

I bought mine from Pepboys Warner brand (a/c delco.etc is all basically the same). Use it now for 2 months, with no problems.

How about just cleaning it?

Cleaning will probably fix a lot of problem, mine had a thick stack of carbon build up. But since I replaced all the other sensor, I just kept the new stepper.
If you pull out your stepper, and cover the hole (with something that won't get suck into the intake) with the engine off, the stepper should be at 1/2 in position. when you first crank up the truck, the stepper whould retract (most open) to let in air for that initial high idle. If the stepper don't move, than it might be bad.
Mine had 150K miles and it was ok. But at $40, I just stuck a new one in.

How do you clean the stepper, solvents? Brush? Removal? I'm not very mechanically inclined and but I think mine might need it as well.

Ken--
Mine is a 95. Where is the stepper motor, and how do I remove it to replace it? I have searched the tech section and cannot find a clear picture.
Many thanks,
Brett

The stepper motor is at the rear of the intake manifold, it has a square plug with 4 wires coming out of it. Disconnect the plug, and you can use a large adjustable wrench or 32mm socket (Off the top of my head) to remove it. I clean it in some lacquer thinner, rubbing alcohol or acetone solvent with a tooth brush. Probably not a good idea to submerage the entire stepper motor in solvent thru. stepper motor is number# 15 on the below link
