I have searched through the archives, okay I browsed, anyway, I am putting on a Rockware heavy duty track rod and I am wondering/assuming that the harmonic balancer does not get put back on? I bought it off someone and I do not have any instructions.

Also, I found a Rancho 5000 steering damper that matched the specs for the NAPA shock that John used. I think it was a 5204 something like 20.25" overall length. I will double check. Anyway, made my own relocation kit for about $8. If you need some specs I can email them to you. I will take some pics when I am done.

I don't want anyone to hold me too this but.. Many a disco owner has either ripped off their harmonic balancer off-roading and nothing has changed.. I would say you are most likely supposed to just leave it off..

I took mine harmonic balancer off. No problems, no wrries.

Jeff, your Disco will sing off-key if you remove the harmonic balancer. I, too, have bashed mine off-road, but it has managed to hang in there. I banged my skull on it the other day, and I'm planning on ripping it off for such insolence. Will be consulting my LR mechanic's manual just to be safe (will report any info).

Please email me info on your relocation - I'm sleeving my track rod, and the stabilizer is obviously in the way.

Harmonic Balancer.....

Mine finally fell off last year while I was driving around town. It kept bouncing around making a terrible noise. Pulled into a garage and used some wire cutters to cut the cable.

When I asked my dealer if there was anything that I needed to worry about their official answer was "Don't worry about it, it doesn't do anything".

I always used it to go over rocks..... hehe. When asked by a friend (non-roverite) what is was, I replied, "It's a custom Rock-Roller for protecting the axle".

Same solution applies for mud flaps, wheel bearings, and exaust valves...
