Disco II:
Can you tow on the two flat plates that stick out of the standard wrap-around brush bar, that have the holes in them? The rover manual says there is only one tow point in the front.

Some say yes and some say no... I think one of two things will happen if you use those as recovery points. One it will work just fine, or two it will rotate up wards and the top bar will dent your hood right where is says Land Rover from what I'm told. I have the bar but, luckly I haven't gotten stuck to try it yet. I would tighten the hell out of the bolts before doing it though just to be on the safe side. Mine is a D1 but I believe that the bar is pretty much the same. I could be wrong though.

There have been quite a few threads on this issue.
Some, as Eric pointed out, recommend no, some say they used them and they work fine.
Generally most people think that in an emergency, it woudl be fine. Additional suggestions are to tighten the hell out of the bolts and/or replace with Grade 8 bolts.
I have a '98 Disco I and have tugged a few things using the 'holes' in the factory brush guard without a problem.
If you intend to get really stuck and expect that it will take more than a strong slow pull, I.E. a heavier shock, maybe you want to consider more.
I havn't been high centered of stuck in mud up to the door handles so I don't know what would happen. For that stuff you probably want a different bumper with a winch.
just a suggestion.

Ok, so with this brush bar installed, where else can I tow from on the front? The tow plate is occupied with the bar, isn't it?

You can put the stock recovery loop on with the brush bar

I thought that there was a recovery loop buried inside the front bumper on all Disco IIs. I've seen the little square thingy that covers them, but I've never looked inside. Is it really usable or is it only for looks?
Thanks,
Mike B.

Ron - I think they removed the recovery loop when they put the brush bar on, since it is definitely not there any more, and there is no room as far as I can see to put anything like that.
Mike B - The cover is cut slightly to allow the brush bar to poke through, but there's no recovery loop!

I think I've got a couple of the stock Disco I front recovery points floating around if anyone is interested - they are durable for straight and even angled pulls.

The linkage arms between the frame and the axle have holes in them that can take a 3/4 " shackle. Since this arm can be used for jacking, can it not also be used for recovery? You could put one both sides for added strength.
I have a photo of this - but how can I get a photo into a message?

Here's the photo: All seems to be sound, but I haven't tried it this way yet. There are many comments about not using the holes in the attachment plates for the brush bar, so is this better?
