While I'm deciding on a proper winch, I am looking for a hand-winch (come-along). I picked up a 4000 lb one from Home Depot, and tested it pulling my disco II up onto 4 wheel ramps, but it was painfully strained and terrifying! I heard there is a much bigger system around, with a 3 feet long arm that can pull 8000 lb, but I don't see it advertised anywhere.

Anyone seen this?

Dean

You might look into the Trifor (sp?) winches as sold in the UK. They are designed for vehicles, where come alongs work, but can be scary. I can't locate website right now, but I'm sure someone will chime in with it (probably Ron!)

Also - High-Lift is slow and tedious for winching, but does work in a pinch - better than being stuck.

Finally, for heavier capacity come-alongs, try GRAINGER.COM or MCMASTER.COM as they are industrial supply houses in every major US city.

A little shameful advertising, with some helpful info.

I would also try Fastenal - we are industrial suppliers located in every major city, and hundreds of small towns throughout the US and Canada.

We carry some hand winches, rated to 10,000lbs.

John,

Did I read that right?? $1590 for a hand winch??

I'd buy one of Ron's "poodle" winches first...

Please tell me that it's not really $1590 for a hand-winch.... If so, WHY???

Try http://www.grizzly.com/, I think I saw a 4 ton come-along in their last catalogue. They also sell the hi-lift for $40.......

Try the Black Rat recovery gear. I've seen a few of these on offroad tv shows...

Yes it is 1590 for a marine grade hand winch. Not something to carry along as a backup. But a possibility none the less....

I would get a 4 ton come along - much better for a backup than a hand winch.

Chris - I have a hand winch like this one (4000lb) but it only pulls about 6 feet - not very much when your swamped in a 100 foot stretch of mud! And it gives me a chill every time I use it - the cable's so thin. I am leaning towards a Black Rat 3500 lb puller, which can have as much cable as you like.

If anyone has a Black Rat or similar (eg Tirfor) hand winch they want to sell, I'd be interested.
