My 95 Disco automatic with 73K miles "clunks" when shifting from 2nd gear down to 1st gear (approaching stop signs, etc.). It has done this since I bought it with 50K on the clock, but it seems to have gotten more noticeable. So much so, in fact, that SWMBO has commented on it. Any input would be appreciated. Please assume that I know next to nothing about transmissions, etc, because that is pretty much the case.

Very common and there's been lots of discussion about the causes and therin lies the problem. Many things could cause this such as worn u-joints, transfer case slop, diff slop in either front or back, broken motor/trans mounts, pinion preload not properly set among others. I guess the good news is that it's probably not your trans. It's doing it's job and the clunk occurs after that.

My '94 Disco has always done this (bought at 80k, now have almost 140k) occasionally ... mainly in parking lot maneuvering, but not otherwise. As noted above, very common and may be normal because of FT 4wd etc. But, if it's really gotten worse (not just that you notice it more) have a shop check out the u-joints etc for play. Doesn't need to be a Rover shop. Incidentally, mine got noticeably less by putting Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil in the transfer case and differentials. It's expensive, but IMHO worth it for the extra gear protection because it lubes better. And just might help in your case too.
