I'm having A/C problems. When my A/C engages there is a noise coming from the compressor. It is a growling or whining noise that increases in pitch and volume with increase REVs. The unit is cooling the truck fine, just making a lot of noise. I took it to the shop and they think it is simply the A/C clutch. The clutch is the part of the compressor that engages the A/C to the drive belt. In most autos the A/C clutch is easy and inexpensive to replace, but the shop said they were unable to find a clutch for a LR A/C. They said all they could do is replace the entire unit, which is quite a repair bill.
Do you guys know where I can get parts for a LR A/C, specifically the clutch? And if not, what else can I do? I really hate to think about replacing the whole unit when it is blowing cold air. I hope you can help me out. My wife refuses to ride in my truck anytime we are going more than a few miles, as we've had a lot of hot/humid weather up here. Thanks for your advice.
Regards,
Jim

Same exact problem on my 88 RR. Please let me know what you find. I'll do the same. Thanx.

Are you going to an independant repair shop? I checked with Alldatadiy (alldata is used by many independant repair shops)and they do not have a part number for the clutch - just the compressor. The compressor is part number BTR5750 and it says $965 plus just under an hour for labor. Maybe a dealer can get you just the clutch. It also may require a special puller to get the clutch off. Check on that

I think you are correct that the A/C can only be ordered as a single unit. Everywhere I checked the A/C is only listed as one part number. It sure adds a lot of expense to replace the whole unit.
I did find some good news, there are places that you can order a rebuilt of some kind for under $500. That sure beats the $900+ the new unit is. The place I've called is called Air-Pro out of Texas. They are checking on the exact price, but he thinks he can get a unit for around $300.
