I would like to ask about a recent problem with a '98 Discovery. I have had a rough idle for a week or so. Also, the check engine light just came on two days ago. I put it in for a service today (not a dealer) wanting to get the plugs, wires, rotor, etc taken care of. They called me back saying they couldn't do the plugs, etc. because they couldn't get parts and they couldn't plug it into a diagnostic scanner, because only the dealer has those. I read a bucnch of posts mentioning that some Rovers have a code display under the seat. Would I have this, and if so, how do I decifer the codes. Finally, I will change my own damned plugs, etc. I just need to know where I can buy them.
Sorry about the length, any advice/info will be greatly appreciated.
Happy trails,
Daniel

Daniel,

Your '98 uses an OBD-II system... it doesn't have a built-in reader. Check under the Tech section for a link for more info....

Plugs, easy, should be available anywhere, Champions, etc., will do fine.

Wires, see the Magnecor thread on this board.

Anything else, ask!

I don't know the Champion part number off the top of my head, but NGK V-Power plugs are number BPRSEY. The Champion p/n is listed in the owner's manual. I used these and Magnecor wires on my 98 when I did the 60k service a while ago. BTW, the 98 has an electronic ignition and doesn't have a distributor, so no cap/rotor to change. Just plugs and wires.

Great info, thanks. Do either of you know where I can get Magnacor wires other than ordering them? I want to do this weekend.
Also, is it particullarly difficult to get the plugs out? I've only done this on a 4cyl Nissan.

Number 7 is hard but no biggy with a u joint attachment.

No place else to get the wires for this weekend.

Order the wires, and go ahead and pick up the plugs and change them. Once the new wires arrive, switch them in. You'll already have the hard part done.

Oh, or Ron could change the plugs for you... he's REAL GOOD at changing Disco plugs... LOTS of experience. (Sorry Ron! Couldn't resist...)

Thanks, I ordered the wires and plugs. Looks like I'll have to wait until next weekend to change them out. Has any of you ever used that OBDII software in the tech section? I read all about it, but I'd like to hear from someone who's used it.
Happy trails,
Daniel

Oh, anyone know the correct gap on those plugs?
(Did I mention that all this is rather new to me?)

Do you have your glove-compartment book? Don't spend a lot on one, but if you can find one cheap, they're handy. But a Tech Service Manual would be better!!

In my g-box book, it says "Champion RN11YCC" with a gap of 0.033 to 0.038 inches.

But they come pregapped

Ron

PS a little bit makes a difference try to leave it alone of if you have to mess with it get it exactly .035

I don't have the book. I got my truck used about three weeks ago. I got it from a wholesaler who didn't do alot of refurbishing so I'm doing a few small things myself. I want to get everything back up to snuff, but like I said, I've never worked on anything more complicated than a Nissan 4cyl. I ordered a manual, but I'm very impatient with his rough idle. I hope this cures it.

Thanks again,
Daniel

you may also want to check the stepper motor. that causes the same problem. I belive it's code 48. that happened to me the other day, same symptoms.

I just cleared a code 40 on my 95 with new wires rotor and Dizzy cap - wires caps felt tired -rotor showed signs of arcing and dizzy cap was pretty poor shape too...
Of course I now get a code 44 but wondering if a few miles might clear any excess fuel contaminating the sensor...
Thoughts?

Regarding sparkplug gap - the service manual lists a gap of .035-.040. I normally gap mine on the long end of that spec - .040 or even a little more. I figure why shorten the spark when I don't have to. It probably provides a fraction of a HP extra, but not really enough to feel.

O.K. Here's the outcome on my truck. I did get the plugs in yesterday and decided to change them and do the wires when they come in...hopefully today. When I got to cylinder #6 the wire literally fell out of the boot that connects it to the plug. Guess I found the problem. Anyway, I'll put the wires in ASAP and that should do it. Anyone know if te check engine light will go off by itself? It did go off for a couple days last week, but came back on yesterday. If not, are there any tricks to cut it off on a '89?
Thanks for the input. I'll figure this stuff out yet...
Daniel

Correction, that's a '98 Discovery, not 89
