Hello All,

I Was wondering if anyone who has removed their rear view mirror in a 1996 Disco could tell me how it detached from the windshield button? Did you need to twist it to remove it? Or did it pull straight up to remove? Thanks in adavance...

To get your mirror off the windshield button you simply tap it toward the roof with a rubber mallet or your hand. If you have the auto dimming mirror and need to remove it completely it is much more involved. Repost if want any info on that - I just did it a month ago.
Hope this helps,
Joe

Hey Joe,

This post came right in time for me, as I'm considering purchasing a Donnaly Electronic compass/Temperature display auto dimming mirror. I've found out that our factory auto dim mirrors are made by Donnaly, so I'm encouraged that I won't be taking a step back in quality. They were not able to tell me what kind of mirror button the Land Rover used though. From your description, it sounds like a standard domestic style mount though. The Twist to release are apparently a cam style mount. Just how hard is the mirror to remove in its entirety? I was hoping it would unplug from the wiring harness and that I could use the power leads for the new mirror....

Scott,
As you have probably already noticed, with your rig nothing is as straight forward as it seems it should be! Here's the deal... You can unplug the auto dimmer from the harness by following these steps.
1.remove the sun visor holding clips (carefully, I broke one mine).
2.remove the access panel for the sunroof controls and disconnect.
3.remove the overhead storage pocket assembly (I'm not kidding, they put the #$@&*&%$##$@ plug for the mirror under the headliner about a foot to the left of the access panel!)it's like seventy screws! (a slight exaggeration).
4.pull the headliner down carefully just far enough to get to the plug.
5.attach new mirror and reverse previous steps.
It took me about two hours to do it. A little patience and it's not such a bad job.
I have the factory manual, if you're like me and need pictures I'd be glad to fax the page to you. email me at legault@mindspring.com
Good luck
Joe

I'm an idiot...
I didn't even realize until someone just emailed me that my first post is wrong. On the Disco you tap the mirror DOWN, toward the dash. My other truck goes up. For anyone who found this out the hard way I appreciate your not dragging my mom into the convesation on the board. My apologies.
Joe
