in reading the 'what do you have in your cd player' - am i correct in seeing that if you switch out the head unit with a matching changer, you can still use the factory speakers/ amp set up? personally i'd prefer just having a single in dash cd player - any thoughts suggestions?

thanks!

Ain't nothin' better than a 6-cd changer, with a couple of cartridges so you can play all your cool cds. Why would you want a single CD?

Why? Convenience & safety. Easier to feed the dash player than scramble under the seat. Multi in-dash changer would be nice, though. "Safety" due to vulnerable changer location under seat (thinking water in the cab, which happens to a lot of us fools).

New head unit may not mate well with factory amp - I abandoned factory amp and factory sub, and simply use head unit power (only 50w x 4 but sounds fine with self-amp subwoofer in cargo area)

Whoa...

That's why the changer is safer... you load 6 discs in (or more if you swap changers) and take off. If you're tired of those 6-discs, stop, and then change magazines or reload discs. You can change between the 6 discs with 1 button, as opposed to having to take a disc out of the dash, stick it somewhere, find the one you want, stick it in...

Right about the mud-n-stuff, though... but that's what the Series is for.... ;-)

no... that's what the plug is for! unplug it and take it out if you want to wade deep.

any decent stereo shop can manage to install a new head unit while still using the separate amp for the sub in the back. it will cost a little more for some extra parts, but it can be done. i usually install my own stuff, but this time i was a little over my head. have a nice Eclipse head unit with stock speakers and subs in the back. sounds good. make sure you keep that sub in the back with the separate amp.......will sound weak with just the speakers and no sub. the 4 1/2" (or whatever they are) speakers have NO bass to them. but i am with Blue on this.......like just having the single CD head unit.

Did it bother you to lose the use of the control buttons on the dash behind the steering wheel?
I put on a lot of highway miles with business and I rather like the buttons to switch stations / volume etc.

I never used them to begin with. Those button slots would be better suited for aux lights and so on anyhow. I don't use my radio either, so not much fumbling with the controls too much. I mean I find it just as easy to use my 'new' cd player controls as much as the stock set up. Guess it depends on what head unit you end up with. I have long ass arms too........I could adjust my right side mirror if it didn't have power!!!!!

Single in dash Mp-3 is the way to go all your problems solved, one cd will hold 6 hours of musiv negating the need for cd changer. A company called Blitz I think makes an interface unit to keep steering wheel controls, most utilize the infra-red remote eye for an input.
