Seems though winches are the hot topic, I thought we could generate some data. I'm really curious to hear about the variety of winches our Discos have. This is not meant to spur debate, but that would be just fine too.
Answer some or all of the following questions.
1) Winch type and mounting system?
2) Approximate weight of mods on front end--rear end too, if winch is back there
3) Suspension mods to support winch?
4) Reason for purchase?
5) Downsides or problems?
6) Best line regarding winch?

Ahh, wait until the search is back up:
SG and Husky 8 on front ~90lbs bumper, 113lbs winch
XD9000i on back ~100lbs w/mount
OME HDs all around. Lost about a 3/8" with the bumper and winch in front. Rear is tough to tell cause of all the stuff back there varies so much.
I wrote an article for the club newsletter with basically all the choices. I can email it to you if you want, or you can join the club and get the newsletter back issue ;-)

1. Superwinch x9
2. Couldn't give you a weight...but it's mounted on an ARB non air bag with custom front skid plate
3. OME HD all around
4. cost
5. no complaints...got it third hand, and it hasn't let me down yet....
6. No lines...but it's saved my neck on more than one occasion!

Which winches can actually be mounted into the airbag winch capable ARB without modifications?
By John Graham (John) on Friday, March 30, 2001 - 01:45 am: Edit |
1) Winch type and mounting system? Warn M12000 ARB non-airbag
2) Approximate weight of mods on front end--rear end too, if winch is back there M12K 135lbs, ARB ~110lbs
3) Suspension mods to support winch? OME HD front & rear, plus inch spacer under front spring (front drop 3/4 with winch install)
4) Reason for purchase? recovery of both disco, tractors, equipment, dragging logs, etc. My choice was based on availability (the M10000 would have been fine, but it's no longer produced) and the amp draw at 6000lbs as compared to other winches. My choice came down to M12K or Milemarker with PTO off transfer case (Maxidrive). The M12K won based on functionality/cost for my needs.
5) Downsides or problems? None to mention, the weight is a consideration, but the vehicle with OME HD's actually rides very well with the added weight.
6) Best line regarding winch? low amp draw (250), extra heavy duty winch.
