You can sneak a pair of channel locks in there but it aint fun... I ussually just use a chisel and knock them around like that if I need to.

Same size as a Series nut, here in NZ we use a domestic hot water cylinder element spanner, available at any plumber supply, about NZ$10-20. I suspect you US people have a different water heating system?

You can use a 2-1/8" 3/4" drive socket from sears (about $20) and a 1/2 to 3/4" drive increaser adapter (about $5). It's a tad oversized, but works just fine.

Problem with all the other hacks is you can't put a torque wrench on it.

Another option (not that I advocate stuff like this :) ) buy the shit you need from Sears and return it when you're done & get your cash back.

Russell,

It just so happened that when I was changing the rotors on my Disco, I had just changed the lower heating element in my hot-water heater... here, they're two totally different sizes. The hot-water heater element is much smaller than the hub-nut.

I popped by the local Series Rover garage and borrowed one.

Most of the Series parts houses will have the hub tool for about $15. $25 gets you one you can use with a socket wrench.
