Help, it's been very annoying lately. Everytime I hit a bump, my speakers (stock) turn off. Here's the annoying part... If the bump (i.e. pothole) is on my right, then my right front speaker turns off, if the bump is on my left, then it's the left front speaker. When passing over railroad tracks, then both speakers turn off and it's just my rear that would work. Often times the cure is to hit another bump. This has been very annoying. I tried taking the speakers out and check the wire but everything is connected snuggly. Nothing was loose on the speaker end. I even went as far as soldering the connections to the speaker.

Please help...

On a '95, I believe it's under the front passenger seat? Good luck!

It is under the front driver's seat on mine. The CD player is under the passenger seat. I have a '98.

Thanks to everyone. Just another question, anyone has schematics? I'm assuming the wires come from the radio into the amp and from the amp to the speakers. Anyway, I'll be looking for them. Thanks again!

I'm thinking of buying a 99 TDi Safari (looked at it yesterday) and the compartments under both seats were empty!

Should there be an amp and CD changer in there? Is the garage doing me out of my audio gear?

Any help appreciated

I don't know if they stripped the stuff or not, but believe me, if you have a choice you don't want anything electrical mounted under those seats. If you ever wade a little too deep, you can say goodbye to your amp and CD changer like I did.

Now I have an aftermarket amp mounted in one of the cargo areas in the back and an in-dash CD. I figure if I get them wet now it won't matter, as the whole vehicle will be written off at that point. :)

I wouldn't worry too much about the amp and c/d player being missing. I have the premium sound package and it is nothing exceptional. It's pretty good, but nothing you couldn't beat at a good audio shop. Just pitch a fit and try to get them to drop the price enough to buy a good aftermarket job.
Good luck,
Daniel

Glenn,

Check your email sent you info!

Rob,

I got the email! I hope to pretty soon find where my amp is located. I tried under both front seats but there is nothing there. I'm pretty sure it's amplified since when they all do work, it's sounds pretty decent. I'm no audiophile but I think I can pretty much identify if the sounds are amplified or not. Like I said above, I have an aftermarket HU (Sony ES) and the wattage is 40 x 4. I'm sure if I find where the amp is, I can fix that stupid/annoying problem I have with the speakers. Anyway, thanks very much for that diagram. I really appreciate it! Wish me luck!

The amplifier is located up behind the passenger side kick panel (at least on my '97 it is). The output from the radio is actually line level to the amp. I used the line outputs from my CD head unit and connected them to the amp inputs and it works pretty good. There is a little engine noise, but it's not too objectional.

By the way, I haven't confirmed this but I also understand that there are additional amps on the backs of the subwoofers.

Yes, there is also a small rear amp connected to the LR vibration units (subwoofers) in the rear door. Glenn with the symptoms you note, you might want to change out the entire system.

if you have a aftermarket radio then the factory amp has already been bypassed. unless they used a special hi-low adaptor on the back of the radio. If they did use an adaptor then it reduces the power from the radio and goes to the amp where it is re-amplified. If they didn't use an adaptor you will have aftermarket wireing from the radio on the speaker wires
White=left front
grey= right front
purple right rear
green= left rear
follow those to the amp usally installers will just jump the imput and outputs together at the amp. I haven't worked on a disco in a while so I don't know where the amp is but I hope this info helps

Since we are on the Audio Subject,

Can anyone tell me if there are pre-amp outputs on the stock head unit? And if so how many? Left and Right? Front and Rear? Both? Subwoofer? Thanks for any help, I hate to pull the radio just to find out. Thanx...
