Mine died on Monday (98 S1) and everything from the flexplate back needs to be relpaced. Dealer wants almost 1600 just for the converter, and another 550 for the front clutch pack. Anyone know of another source? BTW they want 6,100 for a new trans

Rebuild kit is pretty cheap (like a couple hundred) or you can get a used one.

Well, I had a very slight crack in the flywheel, but I had to drive it Monday anyway. Well, It had been sticking on the 1-2 shift intermittantly but after a 1/2 mile or so it would shift and be fine. So Monday it decided it had had enough and blew out the front seal and pieces of the front pump came out with it.
