Ack! I just brought my Disco to the Mobil station to have Mobil 1 synthetic oil put in and a filter change.

When I picked it up, the service manager said that they had to put on a FRAM filter because they don't make a Mobil filter for it. He said the FRAM is fine. From everything I read here, that's not the case, that the FRAM is the worst.

The filter looks like it's pretty easy to get to, so can I just go cross-ref a Mobil or Purolator filter, and swap it out without draining the oil? Or is there going to be a flood of oil when I take it off?

Maybe I'll just run the FRAM until the next oil change (October) and bring in my own filter with me the next time. I brought my own oil, and they charged only about $13 for labor and disposal.

Scott

PS. If you're in the Reston, VA area, I really like the Mobil station at North Point. Nice friendly guys, that give you respect with a smile (not like the sour-puss attitude I get from other stations).

Some oil will drain, out, but not much. Just put a pan under there to catch it.

I doubt having a Fram filter on there for a couple of months will harm anything, but if you believe the frenzied Fram-bashing out there, your engine is already toast so who really cares at this point?

I have a question about the oil filter. I read somewhere that in had to be one designed with an anti-flow back valve or something like that.
First, can anyone correct my terminology, and second, can I just go to Murray's and get a filter when the time comes. I ask because they couldn't even tell me what spark plugs I needed...even though it's just a set of Champions.
Thanks,
Daniel

FYI....

Champion RN11YC is what the book recommends...

So I went into a parts store, and they said that they had no such thing, so I told them to get me a set of Champion 322s... in little letters over the "322" label was "RN11YC"...

Yes, you can go in and get a filter wherever... and yes, you want one with a aint-drain valve.

Leslie,
You are correct about the plugs. British Pacific sold me a set of Champion plugs but it was RN12YC.
I went to the link you posted the only Discovery model listd is the '99 Disco I. Is the filter the same for all Disco I years? Part# L25195
Looks like I can get one at Pep Boys.
Thanks,
Daniel

Plugs: 11's or 12's should be fine... we're not dealing w/ a race engine.

You can look up just "Discovery" to get the other years... '99 is broken out spearately because there were both the SD (Series I) and the Series II that year. Doesn't matter, though: ALL Land Rover V8s use the L25195.

I just got an email from Purolator, and they said to NOT use a PureOne filter on a Land Rover; that the L25195 was designed for Land Rovers, and is ONLY for Land Rovers.

Because of that, it is a PDQ item for Advance Auto, it's not kept in stock in stores.

Hope that helps....
