I am wondering, is there any additional support needed to attach a dixon bate hitch, like the camel trophy trucks? Maybe a pintle hitch?

I would be using it for light duty towing, mainly a seadoo and a small trailer for yard and house projects. Also used as a recovery point.

At www.northerntool.com you can get a 10k pintle hook with 2" receiver tube (all in one) for $69.99
they also have other options.

What I am thinking is get rid of the present receiver, on my D1, then increase departure by using a pintle hitch on the bumper.

You will need a backing plate at least to do that.

Back plate is easy, of course I haven't taken the bumper off yet, but I am thinking that I will have to make a bracket that anchors to something a little more stout than the bumper.

Anyone with a Camel Trophy rig out there that can take a look for me?

jeff, you have a north american spec disco? i think to cut off the factory reciever and then nail something to the bumper would be very foolish, and wouldn't really give you a noticible amount of increased departure, + the factory hitch is like a skid plate. that factory bumper seems really thin, so be careful.

i dont know what the ones outside of the usa look like. but i would also warn you to make sure you can open the rear door with your potential new setup.

Rob

You are absolutely correct, I hate to admit it, but I didn't think of opening the door. Well I could always weld the door shut for the 1.5deg of departure angle.

Thanks for the input!

To install a tow jaw on the back of a Disco I, you need to remove the trailer receiver hitch, then cut a hole on the center of your bumper and attach the mounting bracket to the frame crossmember (its predrilled for the bracket). Contact SV for the bracket, they may still have a few lying around.

sorry, special vehicles is a branch of Land Rover in the UK right at the factory that does the customizing of all specialty land rovers like wolfs, camel trophy, etc.

manrico

PS when I get home I'll dig their phone number, or just call the main LR UK number and ask for Special Vehicles at Solihull

One quick question - the standard rear towing kit for a disco II is or is not strong enough for vehicle recovery?
