good ? Just thinking that there if LR was never were would be a nightmare but I would say I'd go with a older LC, Internl. scout or older Cheep. Please don't put those thoughts in my mind. .

i had a '91 trooper and loved it dearly... but it just couldn't take the kind of off highway use the disco can...
it's been my impression that 30% of disco owner i've talked to owned a trooper before their disco.

Old Scout, Old bronco (very old), or a Jeep Wrangler, CJ some thing along those lines.
By Murray (Cdnrvr) on Sunday, July 22, 2001 - 10:49 am: Edit |
older 4 Runner (late 80's) or Land Cruiser ... after that, would rather have a bus pass Funny thing I saw today, some guy off roading in a late 80's Iroc Camaro. He was just taking a run at everything and what he couldn't get up with speed, he just backed out with his buddies pushing and tried it again ... if I didn't have to run, I would have stuck around or atleast taken a picture.

i too owned a trooper before my disco. but i cant agree with the other guys. the trooper was crap. underpowered, WAY underpowerd. something always was breaking on the thing. in fact, the 6th breakdown was my reason for deciding to buy a real suv, (now that i have my disco, im thankful)... but truthfully, if i had to betray my disco and drive another 4x4, there would be not other choice but a Hummer.

84-85 solid axle toyota 4-runner.
By Jeff Bieler (Mrbieler) on Sunday, July 22, 2001 - 02:19 pm: Edit |
If it's a "replacement" for the Discovery, a solid axle 4Runner or an IH Scout.
If I couldn't have the 88" IIA, I would like another 1968 Kaiser CJ5 like I used to run around in. That little guy was a go getter.
By Rob Davison (Pokerob) on Sunday, July 22, 2001 - 03:05 pm: Edit |
yeah , i mean no land rovers at all K
it seems the trend is to pick a vehicle that still has the solid axel, but most are going for no creature comforts... that's where the big dilema is for me. sure i could get and old bronco or jeep, but that are not my idea of a daily driver...
wait i just figured it out... i'd get an x-terra

Sorry, I am ANTI-NISSAN MAN.
I still off-road with the Xterra Club locally as they are nice guys, but my Nissan Frontier 4x4 (on which the Xterra is built) is in the process of being Lemon Law'd. I won't touch a Nissan product.
By Rob Davison (Pokerob) on Sunday, July 22, 2001 - 04:30 pm: Edit |
hmm, well i just figured the x-terra looks kinda like a disco so it probably goes like a disco

I would seriously consider the mercedes Gwagon. With a bit of help I think I could make it do what the disco does. Good size, good traction, good power, we'll built (full frame), and classy.

Arguably, the reason I wanted to get involved in off-road driving was after I drove an LR at one of their courses in VT. I was sold after the first day of off-roading.
If I had not driven an LR, I would have remained an SUV-bitter person. And probably would have bought another Outback and remained a 'sensible' wagon driver. The ability of the vehicle sold me on a new sport...
The poster child for LR....

Late 80's Ford F150. A bit wide, but very good vehicles...
Used them in Alaska, Nevada, Colorado, and Idaho for exploration field vehicles.

I would have to go with a 4Runner. But lets not think like this......it will cause me bad karma!!!! Comfortable enough, big enough, decent milage, decent looks, off road worthy, but still Japanese though. And they all look like they are taking a dump with the rear end sag.

some people have NO IDEA that Range Rover and Discovery are made from the same company, I run into that every time a non-disco owner finds out what I drive, because they think it's a RR.

I wouldn't say every body... Most of the people that I work with think that I drive a Range Rover. Even after I tell them the difference they still don't get it.
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Monday, July 23, 2001 - 09:47 am: Edit |
Eric is right - I was looking for a new front bumper when I first bought the Disco, and the highly-trained dumb-ass in the "specialized after-market off-road parts store" spent 15 minutes searching for parts for the Toyota Land Rover Discovery. Everyone else always asks me how my Range Rover is doing. I tell them I'll sell them my Range Rover for only $40k - what a deal. I was kidding with the "everybody knows..." If I really had to get a non-Land Rover 4x4, I'd go with that new Freelander thingy - it looks pretty cool.

hmmmm, for me: (not speaking for dh)
I started out with horses. Sold them to go to college. I've had an F150 ('78), then a Trooper ('89). I actually started to cry when I sold the Trooper and watched it being driven away (but I made sure it went to a good home - best damn vehicle I ever owned). I used to lust after the old Toyota Land Cruisers (late 70's & early 80's). Since this is a DREAM we're talkin about here, my choice now would be a GWagon.

Duh, correction: I think I meant the the old Toyota Land Rovers ... when I was in college, a freind of mine's boyfriend had a Toyota Land Rover. When he left (in someone else' vehicle) without her to go to the Colorado River for a 3 day weekend, she took it, & 3 more of us on a little trip of our own - we drove down to Newport Beach (So.CAL.) from about 40 miles inland via a an old river bottom/wash complete with areas of "quicksand" and deep foliage & brush. Woohoo!! (Glory days)

i feel your pain over the loss of your trooper.
mine was on the way out so i decided the only vehicle i would replace it with was a disco.
i was driving it to the dealer which is an hour away and letting it sit at a nearbuy shopping center so i could come and drive it in the next morning and it would be running fine
well the starship trooper, knew it was almost over.. so on the way there she caught on fire and burned along the side of the highway, letting me get full insurance replacemnet value. i guess she couldn't stand to see anyone else drive her so she did her self in.

Yep, I almost didn't sell it. It only had 79K miles on it (I used to have a company car also). Like I said, it went to a good home, with a responsible kid that absolutely loves it. I sold it to him with good BFG tires and I left my CB built into it and gave him the K40 antenna that he could screw and unscrew from the roof, and various other goodies. Well, I'm going to draw fire here if I keep going on ...

oooh that was low Kyle
A couple of years ago I was actually in a brand new '99 Trooper and about to drive off the lot when the salesman asked when I'd be by to pick up my jeep. I told the dumb-ass that we just spent the last 5 hours working "the deal", which included him taking the jeep off my hands, paying the last 4 lease payments, and returning it to the leasing company. He said, uh-oh, we gots to rework da numbas on this deal...don't worry, it'll just be a few mo dollas... They had to call in the sales manager and all the other salesmen to get me to stop throwing things and threatening the dumb-ass. After I hand-shredded my file and threw it all over the sales floor, we agreed to let me leave peacefully and they wouldn't call the police.
I drove by 2 days later in my shiny Disco, pulled up to the main sales door, honked, flipped 'em all the bird, and drove over their gravel & cobble landscaping on my way off the lot. I love a happy ending.

F**K that Italian shit: I would have to go with my old '71 IH Travellall 1 ton 4x4. It would move a house! not too good on a tight trail, but comfortable and it pulled the Scout A600 behind it like it wasn't there! A600 was a primo off road beast...

Ah! The LM002. Now there's a purpose-built rig for ya! See how they cleverly placed the brush bar BEHIND the fenders to keep from getting it scratched when off-roading. Got to admit though....that thing could probably whip my a** climbing curbs at the Mall. ;>)

Had the chance to play with an LM002 at Barrett Jackson auto auction a few years ago. That is one bad-ass beast. They were made for the ultra-rich Saudi oil barons to play with out in the desert. The damn tires were life rafts.
I don't think it could hold a candle to Bud's SII on the mall curbs, though

If anyone's dream involves a 1991 V6 3.0 Mitsubishi Montero LWB 5 door, I've got one for sale. Honest to goodness, that truck and the '86 3 door SWB I had before it were great cars. Running stock, they went forever and kept up with Land Cruisers and the like - no serious rock crawling or anything of course.
These are the vehicles that used to take me to the Tabac on Polk street to buy my LRO magazine every month before I finally broke down and bought my dream car - a V8i Discovery 1. God bless those ***tbox Japanese trucks!

Bill, I too love a happy ending. Very funny, I am a member of the x-Troopers owners club. I donated my 89 wit 217,000, I had patched the thing up so many times in the last year that I owned it was ridiculous. I finally had the thing running great, I took it to NC, had it out on the beach and all was well, I was actually getting 22mpg in it even with big BFGs. a month later a catalytic converter collapsed and caused enough back pressure to burnt up a couple exhaust valves.
Anyway, no LR? If money is no object, I may consider a decommissioned hum-vee or an older Land Cruiser. Though I like Bud owned a Willy's Overland Wagon 1954. That was a cool truck but not the reliability that I look for.

A Jeep Grand Wagoneer is pretty much a leaf-sprung Range Rover Classic. IF I couldn't have my Disco, I'd go back to the Wag.
If I can't have my 88", then I'd go w/ a CJ-2a.

Bud,
I used to terrorize everyone else on the road when I had a 70's Trans Am... after I got married, though, I needed something respectable, more of a family car, but I didn't like sedans, etc., so I got a Cherokee. Decent vehicle. Because of that, though, I became interested in 4x4s.
When the time came for a second vehicle, I got a Wagoneer. It's big, looks like a land-barge, but let me tell ya... that thing will out-wheel a stock CJ...
Life was fine and good, and then it happened... I saw a Defender... Then I found out how much they cost... all while I was an undergrad on a penny-budget... BIG bummer.
But, I rather quickly learned about the Defender's predecessor, the Series, and I was hooked. Finally found a beater of an 88"; it's just a step above 'heap', but I still love that ol' rotten thing. It'll go anywhere, you just take all day to do it.
The Cherokee, we got rid of it. I got a decent job, and needed a better driver, and found a deal so I bought my Disco. Now I'm needing to find a home for the Wag.
I still like Jeeps, but I love Land Rovers. They're both competent 4x4s. No arguments, the Rover, left stock, will eat a stock Jeep, and most of the modified ones, too. But here at work we have a motorpool of Jeep Cherokees to use on mine sites, and they hold up much better than the Explorers or Jimmys that we used to have here. I keep trying, but I just can't convince this state agency to buy a fleet of Tdi130 crew-cabs for field work!

Oh, specifics:
Jeep Wagoneer body: 1962-1992
Range Rover Classic: 1970-1995
JW: Square, boxy stying - built for function
RRC: same
JW: usually 4-door, sometimes 2-dr.
RRC: same
JW: serious chassis underneath
RRC: same
JW: AMC V8 (usually a 360); sometimes had Buick engines (oh, and many had the 258 inline 6)
RRC: either a diesel or the Rover/Buick V8
JW: sometimes a manual, but usually an auto 727TF
RRC: same (used the 727TF before the ZF)
JW: many had the Borg-Warner Quadra-trac full-time 4x4 dual-range transfer-case
RRC: used a B-W fulltime dual-range x-case, too (hmm I wonder how different their internals are)
JW: available w/ all the extras (air, power everything, etc)
RRC: same
AND...... (for relevance here.....)
The Discovery (at least the S1) is essentially a RRC with a modified body.
IMHO.

I see your comparison now. I've driven a Wagonner, and owned a RR Classic. I couldn't seem much comparison. About a month after we got the RR ('89) which was 8 years old at the time, my lovely bride said she didn't want to drive anything else. New RR's are way out of the budget, hence the D2. I almost landed an ex-MOD SIII a few months back, until she reminded me that it would also be her "back-up" and needed to be an auto tranny. Some day.
